All these cats, dogs, birds, snakes, gerbils etc all running around the ball park and their owners all yelling BEAR DOG!!! Sounds like chaos, and kinda funny.

Bear sounds like an awesome dog, but there comes a point where it's time to let go. Saying you can't afford the euthanasia fee and can't find anyone willing to shoot him is not good enough.

Apparently everyone in town loves him except the vet.  Can't afford my fee?  Take him home and shoot him, see if I care.  Fark you vet.

BarkingUnicorn: And WTF: a Lab/Dachshund mix???

Think one of my neighbors used to have one of these. It was a curious mixture of parts. The head neck were more closely proportioned for a lab(the neck in particular reminded me of a giraffe) while the body itself was a larger than average dachshund might be.

Dachshunds are tenacious little beasts.  My little black & tan longhair was a jackhammer until I got him snipped.

Recently saw a dachshund/boxer mix at the pet park.

So go ahead and bring your dog to the ballpark. I don't think it's the managers you need to worry about.

Great Story... Growing up I had a chocolate lab named Bear, he lived to 15. 18 is very impressive for a lab, sounds like a wonderful dog.

I have a six month old terror of a boxer at home now, been a lot of fun so far.

Labs also enjoy a good hump. My family's own lab mix -- an old man at 12 -- once air humped my mother's thankfully tolerant cat. At least, once that I witnessed. This was years after he'd been neutered.

Labs are exceptionally doggie dogs. I wouldn't want to lay bets on what fathered Bear Dog, but for the mother's sake I hope it was the dachshund...

Why do veterinarians have to give away services for free? If my car needed repairs that I couldn't afford, nobody would be trying to guilt the mechanic into comping me a new starter motor. Vet practices require a lot of overhead to run when you consider all of the services they cover. That said, if I were this dog's vet for 18 years ( and I saw the dog/owner regularly) I'd probably offer human euthanasia at no cost because it's the compassionate thing to do (and it avoids comments like above).

$150 fee to put a dog down?

Our vet didn't charge us for the last dog and cat we had to have euthanized.

Bear dog needs a cooler vet.

I think you just answered your own question there.  It's humane.  Run the guy a line of credit.  Hell - Take donations in your office, if everyone in town knows the dog.

But no - this douchenozzle basically said, "No humane euthanasia for you - go away dog, your owner can let you die a suffering death, shoot you and botch it, or tie you in a sack and throw you in the goddamn river for all I care."  No money means you can go fark yourself.  To hell with what's best for the animal.

Make your own decision whether to do business with him.

Well to be fair, we only have one side of the story. It's possible that the vet simply mentioned it was time to start thinking about euthanasia, explained the procedure and the cost,  and Caulfield just replied "No, I can't do that" without mentioning that the cost was the obstacle.

It's a little surprising to me though that apparently none of the people Caulfield claims to have asked to shoot Bear thought to ask why he wasn't being put down by the vet.
