spyderqueen: Why would you name a moon out on the icy reaches of the system after the god who ran a FORGE?

My thoughts exactly.

The scientific reason why this is a bad choice is simple - there are already hypothetical solar system objects called vulcanoids, and referring to this little moon as Vulcan engenders confusion.

exatron: greentea1985: Acheron, Lethe,Cocytus, Proserpina (Persehpone's Roman name) or any of the other names associated with the underworld would be better. Even Tartarus or Elysian would be better names than Vulcan. It doesn't connect well at all with Pluto in Greco/Roman mythology, which is how moons are named.

Greco/Roman mythology is how some moons are named.  Uranus's moons, except one, are named for characters in Shakespeare's plays.

Yes, the moons are named based on Greco/Roman mythology based on characters associated with the God the planet is named after. Uranus is an exception because there are not a whole lot of myths about him and many of them involve names already assigned to Saturn and its moons so there were few names available to choose from.

I like Cerberus.

It goes with Charon, Nix and Hydra -- Greek denizens of the Underworld.

Not farking Vulcan (the Roman god of fire).

Vulcan should not be the name of an icy moon.

I thought the Borg ate Pluto.

flucto: Let's not skip the more important point, if it has a moon it's a planet. It's right there in all the scientific literature.

Pluto already has a known moon, Charon.

Was kind of hoping for Erebus so it could be blown up in a future novel from the Black Library.

I actually voted for "Lethe" and "Thanatos", simply because in a hundred year or so, Pluto will be long-forgotten and, as far as we humans are concerned, probably dead. On the other hand, if the Trekkies want to waste Vulcan on such an insignificant moon, maybe that will make room for the Star Wars names when we get to name cool, Earth-like planets we might go to one day...

I submitted the name Thanatos as a write in (probably not the only one who did). Glad to see it got a some votes. Also voted for his twin Hypnos.

Firefly > Babylon  5 > than Star Trek> Star Wars> Battlestar Galactia (both versions) and all the rest.
