Good lord that was a lot of words.  I'm just going to imagine a very sinister Andy Griffith and Opie haunting the Murder She Wrote lady's town.  Then I'm going to catch old age and die.

I'm pretty sure this guy already works in my office complex.

If it was up to me I'd give him a working-over that would make Torquemada vomit in horror.

Maybe local businesses should kick in for a surplus CIA "Noriega-Tested" sound system and set it up outside this guy's house with "Reign In Blood" on infinite loop.

Over the past year, in fact, Smith has been summonsed, arrested and taken to court for disorderly conduct for "loud whistling."

so we've become a nation where whistling too loud can put you behind bars...?

that's just lovely.

quite possibly true.  I'm more concerned that he somehow ended up in a jail cell for whistling.  have we really become a society THAT authoritarian and intolerant...?  what's next?  20 to life for overdue library books?

True. But what else are you gonna do? People say they can hear him a block away and it sounds like heavy equipment beeping. I think this quote sums it up pretty well, "He acts like he's treating all of us to his amazing whistling show and that we should all be so lucky to hear him and his magical ability."

Add that to his own quote of "people who express themselves freely should be held in the highest regard, not the lowest regard," and he sounds like your typical self-righteous dbag that's not much different than someone who is constantly proselytizing their beliefs - which you can't do in front of someone's business either.

so the solution is to...throw him in jail for whistling...?  I don't see how we can call ourselves the 'land of the free/home of the brave' when we feel justified for throwing someone into a jail cell because they whistled too loud for our liking.

I agree, jail was extreme. Ticketing/fining would probably have been just as effective.

Yeah but from the sound of it arresting him only made him into more of a self rightious dbag. If everyone ignored him he'd probably just shrivel away and die like the attention whore he is.

meanwhile there is traffic, horns blaring, trucks and buses blah blah blah. farking sad the guy can't follow his bliss without getting shiat for it. at least he isn't doing something really horrible like feeding the homeless in public. something tells me these folks have never heard the blissful sounds of a high crime poverty ridden neighborhood with whatever passes for music blasting and filthy language at peak volume yelled non-stop. they'd be thrilled to get back to their safe streets and the whistler.

Wait, if you can get arrested for being loud and annoying for whistling in restaurants and businesses, does that mean you can also be arrested for bringing loud and annoying kids into those same establishments?

/Kind of a fill in the blank statement. You can get arrested for bringing loud and annoying _____________ into this establishment.

Whistler, you go , man.

Back in the 60's there was a guy inhabiting the Lake Street/Hennepin Ave or "Uptown: neighborhood in Minneapolis.
He walked all daylight hours, talking loudly, quoting baseball statistics and history.
He was difficult to engage, but if you were fast and knowledgeable enough, you could get him conversing.
Covered a period of almost 10 years and just disappeared one day.
Our collective loss.

Lock him up for a 72 hour psychiatric evaluation, as he is obviously mentally disturbed, and then have him accidentally smash his mouth in while there and no more whistling, ever.

I do not see it that way.  He was annoying the hundreds of people within a one block radius around him...this is no different than loud sub woofers.  I am more than certain that the cops have been called on this guy multiple times, and that they have had many words (perhaps not as many as the linked, unnecessarily long article)...he refused to stop and the cops did something about it.

Take away the fact that this guy was arrested because of whistling, and we will just call it "noise."  You think it is acceptable for one single person to annoy the hell out of hundreds?  How would you have dealt with this situation if you were the cops and gotten multiple calls about this guy?

This is not helping.  You are not defending your position.  This whole thing is silly, but what what do you do with a single person annoying many?

I'm sorry but...you lack any sort of frame of reference to help you in understanding WHY you are wrong.  conversation would be pointless.  pack up and go.  leave this country.  if you stay here, you can only cause further damage.

Now you take all that noise ...
And bounce it off of one building
to another building
and down to the pavement where you're walking
AND IT'S NO WONDER YOU'RE EXHAUSTED AFTER A DAY OF SHOPPING.
NO WONDER YOU FEEL AS IF YOU CAN'T FINISH THE DAY ON THE JOB.
YOU'RE TIRED.
YOU'RE BEATEN DOWN.
YOU'RE IRRITABLE.
YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH ... ARE SUFFERING.

Infants who have not yet learned to stop crying and who developmentally have no concept of society or their impact on others are nowhere close to a guy intentionally whistling loudly in public for Jesus.
