There was a time, decades ago when prom night was predictably boring. Prior to the event, Harry asked Sally to go, and the only news was when Sally wore something cut too low, too high, or when she dumped Harry at the last minute to go with a hunkier date.

uh, that is some weapons grade bogus nostalgia right there.

now if you'd said prom was an excuse for 3 days of keggers, mountains of weed and a few wrecked cars, Id have said sure and moved on.

Seriously. Even if you couldn't get the booze and drugs, it was guaranteed to be badly executed handjobs in the front seat of dad's car or if you were really lucky you had a place to go for some sex.

Why shouldn't guys have the same opportunity as girls to be ripped off spending stupid sums of money on hideous dresses and cheeseball limousines that still stink of the vomit from the Albanian gangsters' wedding they were at the previous weekend?

2013-02-24 10:07:13 AM
Another case involved an Indiana high school in which parents and students tried to raise money for a private prom that would ban gay students from attending.

Nice.

If the kid wants to be made fun of for the rest of his life, who is the principal to stand in the way?

A waste of time dinner with my girlfriend's stupid hick friends (got a round of applause for pronouncing my order right). Then we just said to hell with the dance, went home and peeled off each others formal wear.

Exactly.  I don't get the whole banning thing.  Just let the students go.  The general student population will make sure it doesn't happen in the future.

They should definitely let him wear the red dress--that way the jocks can easily identify who to beat the shiat out of

yeah. like cross-dressers didnt exist in the 50s, 60s or 70s.  judging by the author's picture that guy had to live the tamest, most sheltered early adulthood in the 70s.  His entire notions of teen life must have came from Leave It To Beaver and Father Knows Best.

No doubt, but why should the school bar an ovbiously gender confused kid from dressing as he feels?  Aside from the "icky factor," what harm is there in this kid showing up in another gender's clothing?  How would this asst principle feel if a girl showed up in a pants suit or tux?

I guess there would be no real harm in doing so, but this is such an obvious "LOOK AT MEEEE" deal, and he's trying to make it into some right to diversity issue. Here's a hint, kid: If you don't like their rules, fark em, don't go. The prom isn't some unassailable human right.

Someone's state of mind shouldn't be a factor in determining what rules are applied.  I can understand the idea behind different punishments based on evidence of someone's mental state - but completely different set of rules seem wrong and extreme to me.

Ultimately it boils down to two question....
1.)  Is it okay to have dress codes for events associated with public schools
2.)  is it okay to have different rules for males and females

If you are against dress codes, that's fine.  This is a type of dress code.  But being against dress codes opens the flood gates for all types of clothing.  Every public school I've attended has had a dress code.  Every job I've ever had has also had a dress code.  In fact, most 7-11s seem to have dress codes.  I'm not personally convinced that is a bad thing.

If you are against different standards for men and women; then it would mean anyone could wear any 'formal attire' to the prom; regardless of what 'gender role' we associate it with.  But different standards based on gender is a pretty fundamental belief in our culture (and our biology), so there are some associated problems.  What happens when the guy who wants to wear a dress to prom wants to get dressed in the girl's locker room?  In both cases, these a rules based on gender and 'separate but equal' is an impossible concept.

He is not asking to do that.  It is disingenuous at best to bring up outlandish examples of what else this kid could ask for.

Look, if this kid can wear a dress to prom, what's to stop people from marrying their horses and dogs?!

Is this the thread where conformity rules the day?

Looks that way.

When I was in HS in the 90's, at our school the Jr/Sr Prom wasn't an official HS function. It was off campus, there were chaperones, some teachers, but they were asked to be there, not forced to be there, so there was little the school administration could say when a lesbians couples came to prom and, OMG, danced together and made-out. They both wore dresses so at least they weren't cross-dressing.

I'd really like to see that guy in a dress. Have some control people, give it up for alternative lifestyles!  Ideally, all this would be done out in nature, rather than indoors.

All your drones and robots have an off switch, just like people.
Robots and bees turn me off, but not if they were wearing dresses.

I want to end it all; I'm tired of hearing about people who don't follow the same the lifestyles as I do and my robots in dresses fetish.

I really, really, really wants to see more of that guy in a dress. I think he is a robot.

I'm sure his mom and dad are proud.

I'm guessing that the first women to start wearing pants a few decades ago had to deal with a lot of this shiat.

2013-02-24 12:27:20 PM
Dress codes are fine, but they shouldn't be gender-specific. As long as his dress covers him appropriately, I don't see the problem.

And that article read like it was written by a 13 year old.
