I think the medals are what they use for body armor. Since I rarely, if ever, see any of the grunts wearing any body armor, I'm guessing the more promotions you get, the more body armor you get.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was saying in reply to:

They are not as all-encompassing as some people think. You actually do have to get reasonably close.

Now, if you postulate that North Korea could fire off a salvo of reasonably accurate ICBMs with MIRV warheards, numbered in the dozens or hundreds...then no, they don't have to be that accurate.
For the NORKS, that possibility is decades away, if even then.

They have yet to hit a preidentified ground target even once.

And if you believe that you must believe this:

Nadal: No! Supreme leader the shape of the missiles top has nothing to do with the aero-dynamic. it's about the playbill delivery!

Aladeen: No! its six at the ground and then.. Caboom.

Nadal: Supreme leader! i think perhaps some of your information about bombs is coming from cartoons?

Aladeen: Nonsense! i have been watching a research films!

Nadal: When this film.. just one question? Was there a duck who when the explosion is happens his bill goes around the back of his head. and then in order to took! he had took back in this way?

Aladeen: There was somebody who was suffer the form of like that.. Yeah.

Nadal: Now I'm one-hundred percent sure that you are watching cartoons!

Aladeen: Indulge me for one second. Pretend that I'm an idiot!

Nadal: Ok, I'm there.

That's my thought. America just has to keep subtly reminding China how bad it would be for them if North Korea tried this crap and eventually China will do something. I'm sure they have a better idea of what Kim is doing than we do.

North Korea will be left to wither and die if they anger their Chinese monetary masters. In fact, without massive amounts of foreign aid from the US and other countries, it would have done that a long time ago. The real estate is poison, so to speak. No one wants them because they would become a massive drain on the system, far beyond what either country - China or the South - could accommodate. Even then, undoing the damage socially that Juche has done to their populace would take decades and multiple generations.

Honestly, no, I don't.  A shallow north-south orbit can be de-orbited anywhere on the globe.  So once you have the tech to put something into orbit you have the tech to drop it anywhere.  How is that wrong?

No, a Half-assed nuke which poses more of a threat to the people who are trying to use it than the people who are being targeted with it doesn't equate to scary. Especially when they have no ability to even get close to delivering that weapon without loading it into a truck and driving it across the DMZ into the US base there.

A madman with a plastic knife he got out of the Wendy's salad bag isn't very scary at all.

Don't you people get it....The leaders in North Korea may be fanatical, they may be crazy, they may be desperate.....but they aren't suicidal. They have survived for 60 years and they want to survive for at least 60 more, so they will continue with what has worked for them. There's a supposed picture of Kim Jong-un when he was at boarding school in Switzerland. He'd have been around 15 I guess.

But he looks like an almost normal kid; and he's now behaving much more psycho than Romney ever thought of being. And he doesn't even look normal anymore--something about his eyes. You can see sociopathic eyes very early in kids, and IF this kid is Kim, then he's not psycho then. They had ten years to work on him between calling him home from school and when Kim Jong-Il died. So I'm wondering what his "re-education" was like.

I also don't get how someone who was educated and lived in the West could keep putting up this farce, knowing that so many of his people are starving, and that Best Korea is essentially doomed if it does not change and adapt to the 21st century. WTF are you on about? The "basics of nuclear weapon design"? Really? Here is the facts of the matter: North Korea has developed a "Fat Man" type weapon which utilizes a crude ballistic trigger to cause fissile mass to reach criticality.

Even the 2009 "Nuclear Test" generated a yield of less than 2.4 kilotons. And it was not launched by a rocket or missile.

This is the same technology that required the entire bomb bay of a B-29 bomber to deliver in 1945. Fat Man was 4kT.

viscountalpha: And, have you been FARKING PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR MISSILE PROGRAM!?!

OH MY GOD! MISSILE DESIGNS BASED ON THE SOVIET SCUD III PLATFORM WHICH CAN'T EVEN HIT IN THE GENERAL 100 MILE AREA OF WHAT THEY ARE AIMED AT ARE CRASHING INTO THE OCEAN! SOUND THE PANIC ALARM! WE MUST INVADE IMMEDIATELY. ITS NOT LIKE THE UNITED STATES OR ITS ALLIES HAVE ANY DEFENSE AGAINST THE SCUD PLATFORM.

Jesus Christ. Did you read your own link? Other than one successful launch which placed a satellite into orbit, every one of their missile platforms have failed miserably. In addition, these are IRBM platforms. The Tapodong platform cannot reach the US.

viscountalpha: I'm done posting to the forums for people who don't even do basic legwork to back up their baseless, idiotic arguments.

No, you're pants pissingly terrified of a country which can't feed it's own people accomplishing, only with the backing of a massive international research consortium mixed with a healthy dose of reverse engineering decade old Russian tech which American weapons were designed to counter, to partially detonate a crude nuclear device that is nowhere near battlefield functional.

BronyMedic: YouPeopleAreCrazy: Unless you're talking about a REALLY big one, yes it does matter. From North Korea to California (6,000 miles), a 0.1% miss means 60 miles off.
Or, the difference between San Francisco and open ocean.

Panic and pissed off? Sure. Destruction? Only if you're reasonably close (25 miles).

Really, no it doesn't. You can't exactly move a North Korean city, and we're not targeting mobile military targets with our ICBMs in the event the North used nukes against a NATO ally.

As for the destruction part, that's the whole reason we invented the MIRV system in the first place. A single bomb, no matter how powerful, will only be definitively destructive to a small point around the impact area. Even the Tsar Bomba suffers from this limitation. 9 Warheads impacting with a yield of 300kT a piece will cause far, far more damage than a single 2.7mT bomb detonation over a city could ever hope to. The warheads, when used against a single target, detonate in a synergistic fashion, creating a massive, spread overpressure wave and  a firestorm effect against a target.

oh well - you obviously know more about this than i do...

2013-02-24 06:12:01 AM

Pathman: i have no idea what i'm talking about here, but i don't think that's entirely true.

Look at it this way. Say you have a wall you need to put a picture up on. You need to put the nail in a pretty specific place, right? You'd use a stud finder and a hammer for that, and put the nail right on the spot. That's what precision munitions do. The whole point of their use is to accurately damage or destroy a target with minimal collateral damage tactically, or with minimal casualties to your forces if they're danger close. You need people on the ground, or a drone, or something marking the target or steering it into the target on terminal impact.

Using a nuclear weapon, especially a modern, MIRV-tipped ICBM is equivalent to using a 1967 Corsair at 90 miles an hour to drive the nail into that stud. You don't need precision, you don't want it. The whole goal is to inflict unspeakable damage and casualties to an enemy city or military installation. No one is going to waste a Nuclear Hawk, Minuteman Missile or Trident against a single soft target. They're weapons of last resort and mutually assured destruction - i.e. if you launch against another nuclear country or the ally of, it starts a prompt, in-kind response until it either ends or escalates into full nuclear war.
