Its not unusual for some teachers to try and combine various sorts of historical situations with math in a synergistic manner. Especially during Black History Month. I doubt it really has much to do with the ethnicity or race of the teachers.

The best thing that ever happened to me in math class was an uncle gave me an old book called "A Wartime Refresher in Mathematics". Math is significantly more interesting when the word problems involve adjusting bomb sights or the number of parts needed to build a tank.
