Contrary to Mr. Boehner's "spending problem" claim, much of the deficit in the next 10 years can be chalked up to chronic revenue shortfalls from the Bush-era tax cuts, which were only partly undone in the fiscal-cliff deal earlier this year.

Small surprise there, the GOP's only game plan at this point is flat out lying about practically everything in order to keep their fat cat donors happy.

Not even lightly tethered to reality and with less morals than a randy alleycat.

Cut defense spending and take a hard look at who gets disability. Working at a nonprofit free clinic for indigents, I've found most of the customers are on disability for things like being too fat, being bipolar, having PTSD for the last 40 years, etc. I even saw one where an able-bodied 22 year old was on disability for ADHD. And many of these folks work cash jobs under the table and take disability checks on top. It's staggering how many people I've met that can work, but are on the government dole. I know it's anecdotal evidence, but I've worked with a lot of folks like this.

Tax rates on rich folks are plenty high, that isn't the problem.

The problem is in the over 1 million allowable tax deductions the IRS offers to individuals and businesses including LLCs.

You wanna see a vast increase in Federal taxable income overnight?  Just remove ALL IRS deductions.

Problem solved.

Well, the rich do rely extensively on government, but so long as they pay their fair share there's no need to vilify them.

Nope, leave tax rates the way they are, just stop all deductions.  I'm not advocating an across the board equal tax rate at all.

Still don't understand why we need to spend a bigger percentage of our GDP fighting a bunch of guys who live in mud huts than we did during the Cold War with the USSR.

Democrats have been labeled the party of "tax and spend" my whole life.  Which is infinitely better than "borrow and spend".

2013-02-23 05:12:27 PM
The deficit is a non-issue. Right now it is being reduced at the fastest rate since the end of WW2.

But here I do agree with fta, Raising taxes at the top is neither punitive nor gratuitous. It is a needed step, both to achieve near-term budget goals and to lay the foundation for a healthy budget in the future.

Why taxes have to go up

Because shiat costs money?  Because the private sector isn't stepping up?

2013-02-23 05:27:56 PM
First it was taxes on the top 1%. Then the top 2%. Now the NYT says that tax rates that were partially returned back to their pre-Bush level need to finish going back up.

So now it's time for higher taxes on the top 1% as well as more middle class taxes.

ilambiquated: The most amazing part of the State of the Union was when Obama said he thought the government should pay its debts and the Democrats clapped but the Republicans didn't.

Probably because it was an incredibly dumb line. The only way the US wouldn't pay its debts under today's obligation and debt scenario is if the president chooses to not pay them.

HempHead: Still don't understand why we need to spend a bigger percentage of our GDP fighting a bunch of guys who live in mud huts than we did during the Cold War with the USSR.

Because it makes the GOPers "comfortable."

/exact words a GOP voter gave me when I told her that we are spending more now than during the cold war.

As a libby lib with extra lib sauce, I believe that Social Security Disability could be the most abused Federal program this side of military procurement.
