Better the shiathead ramming into the side of a police cruiser and dying than ramming into someone's compact and inflicting serious injuries on them.

Cops didn't kill the rider, they protected someone else from having a motorcycle slam into them at 125 mph. The other people using the road and not engaged in illegal activities have more a of a right to protection than the dickhole evading the police.

When you're travelling 184 feet per second, there isn't a lot of time to change lanes if someone moves in front of you. That's why you don't go that fast. Bad cop or not, that's an expected possibility riding like that.

Sounds like the cops did what they were supposed to do. Bike race across the causeway all the time and there have been some pretty bad accidents, including several fatalities, on that bridge over the years.

This story reminds me of an old saying from Florida.

There are bold motorcyclists.
There are old motorcyclists.
But there are no old, bold motorcyclists.

The dude and his passenger were foolish to do 125 mph on Courtney Campbell Causeway, much less anywhere on public roads.

My stepdaughter and her kids witnessed another dumbass doing 100+ mph on a crowded Tampa multilane road (Waters Ave.). A driver didn't see him coming fast, weaving across lanes, and pulled out in front of him. The dumbass and his bike literally exploded from the impact. Of course, he died at the scene. The man wasn't charged due to the circumstances, i.e. motorcyclist weaving into his lane at high speed in a 40 mph zone.

/Just another Darwin Award, IMHO.

At 125, do you really think it would have made a difference?

It can depending on if you smack, slide or roll. At 125mph nothing is going to save you if you slam into a solid object. The helmet may keep your head intact but your neck and body are going to get some snaps. Although I have friends who have survived such impacts and been in traction for months. If you roll it can actually be worse and you get multiple smaller impacts all over the body, snapping a bone with every hit and wrenching the meat all over as you pretzel roll your way down the road. If you slide.....you might be ok, with the right gear and a ton of luck you can even walk away from it. A lot of surviving a long slide is up to the rider and how experienced he is, ready to sacrifice his ass cheeks to the pavement. I have slid a few times in good gear and without, my worst was a 50 foot slide on a wet road that destroyed my blue jeans and gave pizza legs. But no hospital stay. I've actually slid on my helmet and had it take the brunt of the damage leaving me unharmed, on that wreck if I had not had a helmet I would have lost my face and likely a bit of brain on the asphalt. Of all the wrecks I honestly believe helmets saved my life twice from certain death, the helmets were cracked from impact.

If you ride, eventually, you are going to get hurt. Ride long enough and you will get hurt bad at some point. For me its still worth it. Not riding like a farking maniac can greatly reduce the odds of it being a really bad drop. But nothing can stop the other vehicles and what they do to you, just pray you can get out of the way.

THE COP WAS STILL IN THE CAR. There is no way (even in Florida) that a living human being (even a cop) would intentionally get hit by a motorcycle (especially one traveling over 100mph).

Just sayen'. I'm pretty sure the cop didn't expect the guy to hit him.

Something some of you don't seem to comprehend.. cops end CHASES if they are unable to detain the suspect after a certain amount of time or distance, NO WHERE does this mean they cannot setup a road block! NO WHERE! Even if the cop setup a legit road block it would not be illegal.. the driver lost control and could not stop for the road block and THAT was the reason for the accident.

So...even if having a radio gave you clairvoyant knowledge of everything that was happening in a 50 mile radius, how would that make it the fault of anyone other than the driver? If you hit a vehicle from behind the accident is your fault. You have a responsibility to maintain control of your vehicle, other people don't have a responsibility to stay out of your way.

Really? You think all cops are on the same frequency? They're not. Even in most larger cities the cops within that city use different frequencies.

Even if the city cop's dispatch relayed the information to the state cops, that would never get done in time for the state cop to get the information. The bike was going 125 mph.

The bike was clocked at 125 at one point. TFA does not say how fast he was going on the bridge, or when the collision happened. It could have been faster, it could have been slower. And with a passenger on the back, you don't think they should have been extra careful to avoid doing anything that might have caused a crash? She was basically a hostage at that point. They likely had the guy's plate, they would have caught him eventually. This sort of outcome is why they do not use spike strips with motorcycles.

At 125 you hit a pedestrian or another bike or even a small car, you're going to kill someone. It's one thing on the big wide-open, but this guy was doing this in a vaguely urban (50 mph limit) setting? And the fact that he managed to T-Bone this cop kinda says he wasn't going to be avoiding whatever got in his way. That cop stopped a dangerous maniac who was gonna hurt someone else if he wasn't stopped.

As someone rather familiar with how local precinct/state trooper dispatch works, He is so right. City/County Dispatch and State dispatch are separate offices, unless you live in a small state (i.e., NOT Florida) where the cost of the State Patrol maintaining their own radio center is too high to justify keeping is separate. The local dispatcher can radio the State Trooper (in the event mutual aide is called for), but is more than likely not monitoring their channels or even talking with them on a daily basis. They have their own operators.

Rider was running from the cops, in a construction zone. I fail to see where the authorities are the least bit at fault here.

Looks like everyone's itching to find some super-conspiracy to make the cops the bad guys on this.

The dipshiat was doing twice the speed limit, damn right a cop's gonna try and nail his ass to the wall for that. Plenty of non-cops would want to do the same.

The cop broke off pursuit when they failed to stop, in the interest of public safety... chasing them can lead to higher speeds, and more dangerous impacts. Last thing anyone wants is to be plowed into by a few hundred pounds of motorcycle and meat, just to be followed up with a whallop a magnitude greater as several thousand pounds of police cruiser finishes a bone crushing one-two combo.

There is also the possibility that the officer was nearing his top speed, either the limit of the vehicle, or the officer was aware of his own limits, and knew he lacked the skill to handle a 2 to 3 ton car at those speeds. Even if these were the main factor in the officer ceasing pursuit, it was a smart move.

The cruiser that was hit was a state trooper, not city police. Even barring CruiserTwelve's mention of them operating on different frequencies, a state trooper's not going to serve as a one-man road block at a city PD's request, unless the suspect has committed some serious crimes. And even if the state troopers responded, they would not have one car jump out of a construction zone in the hope of getting a lucky hit.

My take on the whole mess is that the guy took a gamble and lost his life in the process. Hopefully the girl (Which I took as a second rider, not a passenger) lives to learn from the ordeal. The city officer did right to break off, and the state trooper got an unlucky break. Only one at fault was a cocky SOB on a crotch rocket.

The first Cop was from the Clearwater police department, the one involved in the accident was from the Florida Highway Patrol. Even though they both have radios they would not hear each other as they were on different frequencies. Unless the Clearwater dispatcher contacted the FHP and requested assistance and then the FHP dispatcher put out a call regarding the speeding motorcycle then the FHP officer had no idea he was coming.

And anyone who thinks a cop would pull out in front of a 700lb vehicle (400lb bike 2x150lb passengers) traveling at high speed is nuts. That type of impact could very well kill the car driver and cops know it.

It also happened at night (10:30 PM) so the FHP officer would have a hard time judging distance even if he did see the bike coming.

If the bike was approaching at 125 I seriously doubt the highway patrol cruiser could have accelerated fast enough or the officer driving it react fast enough to intentionally "block" a bike approaching that quickly. The rider an hero'd it big time, end of story, move on.

why is everyone assuming the motorcycle was going 125 when it hit the cruiser? the article only says that the chase reached 125mph at one point. It's possible he was going much slower near the end. Of course you can't tell one way or another from the article.

I really doubt the cop in the car deliberately cut off the motorcyclist, if for no other reason than self-preservation. Getting creamed by a motorcycle going 125 mph is absolutely going to total your car and has a significant chance of injuring anyone inside. My guess is that the cop did deliberately move to block, but either was going by radio and didn't look behind himself first (or just didn't see the motorcycle coming) or he thought he was giving the guy enough time to stop but wasn't.

The cop intentionally pulled out in front of him. That is who was intentional. It wasn't negligence on the rider.

What the cop did was wrong. I'd gamble his lights weren't on either.

What the cop did was right. And I would gamble that his lights were on. The only negligence here was the idiot motorcycle rider who thought he was above the law.

I lived in Orlando for many years and if there is one thing I learned its that the only thing dumber than a 21 year old on a motorcycle is 4 of them riding together. Sometimes I'm amazed that I never saw someone die on I-4, especially around bike week.

If you're doing 125 MPH and approaching a car doing 65 MPH, it's like coming upon a stationary object in the road while you're doing 60 MPH.

Friend of mine talked about doing 100+ MPH on a bike and coming up on traffic. Said it was quite a scary and enlightening experience. He still rides, but a bigger cruiser, not a racing bike.

They don't call them donorcycles for nothing.

Look, clearly there are some farkers in here who belive that just because one time, - ok probably many times - the cops came upon their stash and confiscated it like the law says, that all cops are EEEvilllll.

In this case, yeah the cop probably should have been watching closer. But if you ask me, enabling Darwin should be rewarded. I'd have voted for spike strips. Yes spike stips. Yes on a motorcycle.

I see this shiat ALL the time. Wheelies at 80 mph, also. Lane splitting while speeding. shiat you would expect to see in a movie and never IRL because it's so dumb and suicidal.

Happens all the time in Atlanta as well and we drive fast around here, it is not unusual to be going 85-90 mph on the downtown connector and be passed like you are standing still by some idiot on a sport bike.

This could be derped back and forth all day (and this being Fark it will be) but they were both wrong. Speeder was stupid for jeopardizing lives and cop was stupid for killing someone with his negligence. No winners. Except Darwin.
