The well-adjusted adults on Fark know differently though, I'm sure.

brag, no. but most children are lied to more than enough by their parents and other adults. tell them the truth. people who partied hearty may have had fun. They also had friends (or them selves) get arrested, whisked away in ambulances, do damage to their health, pissed away their money, blah blah blah. sure there was plenty of fun to be had but everything comes with a price. everything has its consequences. i'm not a parent but i see good in open honest dialogue when it is age appropriate for the subject matter.

Why not? I don't do drugs, but if they're totally awesome, why wouldn't you want your children to do them?

You'd think my three kids, Mary, Jane and Juan would have alreay figured out where their names came from, but they are kind of dense

I kind of look at as I want my kids to know me but when to tell them about things I've done parallels their age. No, I'm not going to tell them when they're in middle school about all the things I did in college. Ill stick to my middle school stories. But when they are in college, yes, I would want to have honest dialogue with them.

True Fact: my one and only kid turns 20 today.

She's a terrific, mature, well-adjusted young lady now, studying international relations at a major university. She and her friends drink a little on weekends, as college students generally do. But she really doesn't have the time, inclination or desire to do drugs. And from past experience at concerts, I know she gets sick at the smell of weed anyway.

I got high a lot when I was her age. Ive never told her so specifically, but she's seen pix of me back then, and she's seen my music collection. She ain't dumb. But it really doesn't matter... She is her own person and does as she pleases.

Children of parents who disclose past alcohol, drug or tobacco use are more likely to have more positive views about drugs than peers whose parents don't

GOOD. What does "positive views" mean, anyway? That "they're good, and I should do them"? or "they might not be as bad as the government that makes billions off of drug crime laws says they are"?

"Kids are pretty savvy, they see the picture of their mom and dad giving the peace sign on the VW bus," he said. "How do you communicate with your kids about that?"
Uh, no. Not for at least a generation. Our kids will see stuff like this on their parents' Facebook page:
i830.photobucket.com
and their parents will have difficulty explaining how such activities could be "bad." God help you if you have a male child. "No, those girls are doing bad things. You don't want to hang out with them. You should never be an environment where scantily-clad young females are using drugs that put them into sexual hyperdrive. No sir."

I can see how that would be difficult.

My youngest daughter called me up this fall and was all freaked out because she had done too many shrooms.  I talked her down, told her to make a nice cup of tea, and then we discussed the proper dosage of shroomies (i.e. you need a lot less than you think).

If I had had that conversation with her when she was 20, this would not have happened.

All my 50ish peers never used drugs. In fact, they've never seen them anywhere. Wouldn't recognize them if you had 'em.

That's what they tell their kids and guess what? The kids aren't buying it.

We all want our kids to follow in our footsteps, but why is it that the ones they most want to follow in, are the ones you tried hardest to cover up?

The students in my school get a chuckle when I remind them that their teachers, who can get pretty moralistic and uptight, were from the generation of "sex, drugs and rock and roll"

I get quite a few of my colleagues to go quiet when I ask them if they never had alcohol, drugs or sex before the government said they could....

My oldest kid knows I still smoke weed. I've never gone into detail about the drugs in my past, but we've been far more honest with the kids than the farking DARE program.

I'm hoping at least one of the kids grows up to be into weed. If we don't legalize soon, I may need a new connection eventually.

Niether has asked me directly (17 & 12) but I did tell my oldest that I didn't think pot was as 'bad' as tobacco, alcohol, coke, meth, etc.

I always thought that was the biggest load told during my youthful years - that they were all the same and they were all 'evil, gateway horrors that'll make you fling yourself off a building and such...' than, as once the weed was sampled, most realized - hey, this isn't the horror story I was told about' - then others (not me thank God) thought the same must be bs regarding the other stuff - and they found out differently.

Socially acceptable or not, cigs and booze are more addictive/harmful than doobage - legal or not.

/obvious statement is obvious

stupid.

FTFY.

Please tell me how someone getting high every farking day like Willie or Snoop is doing their life any justice.

Addiction is addiction whether you think it's cool or not.

While it may not as 'bad' as alcohol - and that has yet to be determined - pot is not harmless.

Personally I'm waiting to see the spike in traffic accidents in Colorado and Washington state caused by people driving 'high' and then how it is going to explained away.

Alcohol KILLS thousands of people every year. Directly. And nobody needs to be told how bad tobacco is, we already know.
The research is already in - Pot is absolutely, positively, definitely not as bad for people as alcohol. It's not as dangerous in the short term, it's not as dangerous in the long term, and it's not as addictive.

Don't pretend like people haven't been smoking pot for centuries already, we have a pretty good handle on the effects at this stage. Even *if* (and it is a big if) the schizophrenia link is proven later, it's still a million times better than the cancer, liver and heart disease caused by the other two.

If you want to tell me it's boring and a great way to stumble through life without direction/ambition, go ahead, I quite agree. But the rest... you're just actually wrong.

"While it may not as 'bad' as alcohol - and that has yet to be determined - pot is not harmless. "

It has yet to be determined that you can't overdose from cannabis?

Do you know how many people die every year from alcohol poisoning?

I'm sorry but as far as ALL drugs, psychoactive (buzz giving) and otherwise are concerned, weed is about as safe as it gets.

You anti-drug extremists know nothing about drugs and never will because all you have on the matter is what the anti-drug extremist un-informed government has told you.

And by the way, cannabis doesn't impair your motor skills like alcohol.  It can fark up some peoples' driving but not everybody's at reasonable doses.

A recent CNN report showed that people at 3-5 times the legal limit for THC drove just fine.  That was from 3/10'ths of a gram, which is more than I smoke in a given session and I smoke a lot.

It took almost $20 worth of weed to fark up their driving.
