So if I form two dozen corps I get 25 votes? Hooray! Do my corps actually have to do anything or own anything other than a mailbox?

When conservatives speak about how "corporations are people" they are speaking from a legal sense not a tangible reality. However, this is an example of how one can take their beliefs and partisanship to the extreme where reality no longer matters as long as the other side doesnt win.

We can't vote for school board elections because they can't procreate or have children. Wait a minute. Gays can vote. Well that sounds like discrimination! Just because my lifestyle is to be self promoting, self centered and greedy shouldn't matter towards my god given constitutional rights as a person! What next? Narcissists can't vote? Satanists can't vote? Oh, now you wanna violate my right to practice religion because I worship the almighty dollar? Fine, my cousin Blackwater is pretty up on his second amendment rights. Lets see how it plays out! By the way, did you see how me and my old lady Google are going to adopt this little farker lovefirststool? I'm going to give him everything I never had when I was a poor LLC.

People generally don't understand the origins of corporate personhood and why it's actually an important concept.  That doesn't mean I agree with Citizens United, but one shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

So when these corporations show up at the voting booth, what do they use for picture ID?

So if they break the law. Do they go to jail and lose them rights?

An AR-15 wrapped in the Constitution.

One vote for every 10 employees living in the district. Watch the employment numbers rise...

I think the democrats in the Montana legislature need to add a section to this bill that states that corporations can only vote if they pay taxes in the municipality.

That'll take care of this.

A green and white piece of blended fiber with a past president's picture on it?

Well over 50% of people don't pay any taxes. Are you saying that they shouldn't be allowed to vote either?

You people don't understand that "coporate personhood" was a concept one court law clerk pulled out of his ass?

Really? I'm pretty sure 99% of people with an income in this country pay sales tax.

FTF proper quoting.

If that's the bar, it would be pretty easy to put a box of paperclips on the corporate account. BAM, sales tax.

Besides, I really doubt that 50% claim was a serious statement.

2013-02-23 09:56:16 AM
I'd be fine with this if we allow all residents in a state the right to vote. Citizenship should only apply to federal elections.

BZZZZT! Roughly half of the population do not pay income taxes due to deductions. They still pay other taxes, like sales taxes, property taxes, Social Security and Medicare taxes, etc...

I would be in favor of the State of Texas executing the Board and executive committee of a corporation which made a knowing decision to kill people in order to increase their profits... (I'm looking at you BP, Haliburton, KBR, etc...)

Technically, filing your taxes and getting a larger refund than you paid in is still 'paying taxes'.

Republican.

I'm shocked.

My thought as well. Or per-dollar-of-revenue or something equally asinine.

What the shiat.

/I love this state, but we have our crazies. You know, in the actual legislature. At least Bob Wagner's not there anymore.

2013-02-23 10:02:19 AM
Republicans: The right to vote is fundamental and inalienable.  For anyone except an actual, living person.  They need to jump through hoops to vote.  And we might just toss their registration forms in the dumpster anyway.

Ummm, I kind of doubt BP knowingly decided to kill people...

2013-02-23 10:03:53 AM
This is more common than you think; I remember getting into it back in 2009 when a similar thing was being pushed elsewhere in the country. Basically along with all the tax breaks, underwriting of costs, and regulation exemptions that places use to try to get the attention of big companies (which sometimes ends up biting them on the ass; see all the municipalities who got left footing the bill when Borders went under), some places say "if you open a store in our city, we will say that your entire corporate management has established residency through the fact you have a building owned by the company in town and will be able to vote for or against any legislation to best serve your company should you choose to do so."

It's ridiculous, but it's not novel.

2013-02-23 10:04:07 AM
Well, first the corporations have to pay taxes like I do.  You pay taxes on income, period, none of this taking expenses out first.

so then not the Supreme Court? Because the Supreme Court believes they have rights and are not just are a legal entity.

Do you think corporations don't have rights?

I tried to come up with a reasonable response for this, but all that came out was a garbled mass of obscenities.  I think I'm going to have to sit this one out.

Bonus points: look at how many people are willing to claim Obama raised income taxes on 99% of Americans by letting the FICA holiday expire (since payroll taxes are based on your income) while still claiming 47% of Americans don't pay federal income tax (since payroll taxes are listed separately from your income taxes).

The bill in question was tabled, and will never see the light of day. As juicy as the story seems, it's really a non-issue.

The important point is that the same legislator wrote a recently-passed bill legalizing the eating of roadkill.

And unemployment. And Fica. And Medicare. And state tax. And Local tax. And yes, sales tax. Granted the first three are technically 'fees', but still.
