Did somebody find out about the noon orgies in St. Peter's Square? I thought that, at least, would stay a secret.

rufus-t-firefly: rufus-t-firefly: I feel obliged to point out that McCain was actually quite tactful, since he wasn't talking to his wife.

In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c--t."

Eh, the church has been covering up shiat forever and has been corrupt for centuries.

My Dad's childhood parish had a priest that banged all the lonely housewives in the neighborhood and then ran off with a 16 year old girl he taught at the Catholic High School. They also had a nun and priest run off together.

You're can't tell people to not have sex AND not masturbate and have them come out normal.

No one saw Godfather III.

Rev. Skarekroe: There were two things I loved about The Godfather III - the papal subplot, because I think that's an interesting part of recent history, and the fact that Connie turned out to be the most vicious member of the Corleone family.

I thought that was one of the worst parts -- a total 180 from what her character was in GF1 and GF2.

swahnhennessy: This guy was elected pope and accepted by Catholics despite everyone knowing the role he played in covering up the Church's sex scandals. Whatever got him to resign has to be huge. Like, he was diddling altar boys in line at the Vatican Bank to cash forged checks from the Mafia while making prank phone calls to the widows of 9/11.

Or, it could be that he's much more ill than they're letting on. When they let it slip that he's blind in one eye, I wondered if that "fall" in Mexico City was in fact a stroke. He looks suddenly much much older than he did even last year, and a bad stroke--or series of strokes--could have done it. This sudden decision to resign could be from a man who has suddenly felt the icy finger of death upon him.

Rotten to the core.  The mere fact that Benedict was chosen to lead the church after masterminding over a decade of sex abuse cover-ups shows how morally bankrupt the priesthood has become.   http://www.hbo.com/documentaries/mea-maxima-culpa/synopsis.html prov ides a good summary of his role in protecting pedophile priests, all against the backdrop of an unfortunately typical case of defenseless kids being raped for decades while the church turned a puposefully blind eye.

I like that he has a pacemaker.  God designed him a bit faulty, and instead of following God's will and perhaps dying naturally, he gives him the finger and gets a mechanical device to keep him alive.  The hypocrisy in the church is endless.

Couldn't have said it better myself. They could have made a movie about Connie running things and it would have been GREAT!

Millions of happy, well adjusted Mormons disagree with you.

Celibacy was never intended to be part of the priesthood.  That is one of the major screw-ups of 4th century Latin Rite Catholicism. The priesthood was intended to be part of every family.

The part about there being gay prostitutes running around the Vatican is true. It was discovered on Italian police wiretap years ago and reported in papers. I don't think this is why the Pope resigned.

Anything people just now noticed is a "conspiracy" of vast, dire, and epic proportions. You know, like the fact the FBI has been listening to our cell phone conversations for 20 years and never bothered to hide it but someone just now wrote an article on it so it's all a big scandal.

If people don't pay attention, it's the criminals' fault that they weren't even MORE obvious, I guess.

Pope Adrian II (867-872) and his wife might have a bit of a problem with your dates.  Gregory VII mandated clerical celibacy in the eleventh century as part of a Church land and holdings grab.

I'm confused. If there's a big secret gay faction controlling the church at the highest level, then why is the church so anti-gay? I don't see how that is in the big secret gay faction's best interest. This sounds like "gay agenda" bullshiat meant to further demonize homosexuality. The implication is that it's not the obvious evil douchebags who allowed pedophilia to happen, but a secret (very important, so that guilt can be fobbed off on someone who can never be found) GAY (because eeeeevil, and also some self-loathing) faction. It's like blaming the Rosicurians or the Knights Templar or aliens. Also "the devil made me do it" has lost its cachet and they know it.

If there really was a "velvet mafia" with the kind of power they're hinting at in the article, in the largest, most influential organization in the world, with an infallible representative of God for a mouthpiece, you'd think they'd have done what was obviously in their best interest and issued a papal bull declaring homosexuality FABULOUS.

I can only speculate but:

1. Because same-sex relationships don't generally lead to spawning more Catholics.

2. They're pandering to a socially-conservative rank-and-file.

3. There are plenty of historic examples where an aristocracy or political elite that publicly condemned homosexuality actually condoned it when practiced by their own.  The leadership of Hitler's SA is one example I can think of.  There are also a number of Republican politicians who have been caught with a "wide stance", to the point where it's a running gag on Fark and elsewhere.

I was raised Catholic, I was an altar boy, and I was really into my Catholicism.  I also worked at my church a few nights per week while in HS stuffing bulletins, answering phones, and doing other secretarial stuff.  I lost the faith my senior year*, and only occasionally feel the tinge of Catholic guilt.

Our pastor was gay, into gay porn, and into trading gay porn.  It all came out when the diocese held some sort of internal investigation.  Visting priests would come around and swap gay porn.  I don't know what else they did.

Anyway the whole point of this is that when all this came out, I guess what was discovered (or at least speculated), was that the church actively recruited gay men into the clergy, because the celibacy that came with the cloth would prevent them from the abomination of homosexual acts.  I suppose this is all speculation but it makes sense to me.  The gay porn priest at my parish was in the Marine Core during Vietnam, and came back utterly confused.
/CSB

/no, he never touched me.  nice enough guy, but kind of an asshole to the "teen workers" when we didn't do some menial secretarial shiat right.
//once I was alter-serving for confirmation and the Bishop told me I had the calling.  Scary.

*I lost the faith completely and instantaneously.  It was the Sunday morning after the Saturday night that I lost my virginity.  I was sitting on the alter looking out into the congregation during the Homily as the (above) priest was going on about the abhorrence of abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty, and... contraception.  Having just committed the ultimate sin the night before, I was feeling pretty shiatty until I looked out into the congregation to observe everyone nodding in agreement with him and noticed each family had one, or maybe two children.  Never stopped having sex since.  Sex is awesome.

You quit because you couldn't hide your hairy palms any longer?  I've heard worse.

I think the critics focused too much on her acting (or lack there of) and the fact that it wasnt "Godfather part 2".

So yeah, there is too much hate for "Godfather 3". Just sayin!

It wasn't a bad flick. I mean, it wasn't up to the standards of "Mad Max 2", or "Pee Wee's Big Adventure", but, umm, well, it had Pacino!

Celibacy was never intended to be part of the priesthood.  That is one of the major screw-ups of 4th century Latin Rite Catholicism. The priesthood was intended to be part of every family.

Now the question is whether there are any heterosexual-but-celibate Roman Catholic priests that fit the current ideal.

Incidentally, I saw a movie about priestly vampires a while back but can't remember thew name so I can't find it among the zillions of other vampire movies. And no it's not "Priest (2011)." The plot is there's an priestly order of vampires that live on the blood of volunteers who donate as a religious ritual, but the order is dying out because there are no new vampires being made, and a renegade priest starts preying on unwilling humans so another vampire priest has to hunt him down, and at the end there's a vampire baby born. URL please?

The Council of Elvira (306) is often seen as the first to issue a written regulation requiring clergy to abstain from sexual intercourse. Its canon 33 decreed: "Bishops, presbyters, deacons, and others with a position in the ministry are to abstain completely from sexual intercourse with their wives and from the procreation of children. If anyone disobeys, he shall be removed from the clerical office."

Before that, most priests were married.

/not arguing with you, just pointing this out.
