taking a jukebox investigators believe they mistook for an ATM.
...
The driver tried to back the truck into the business, but the door opening was too narrow
...
Both suspects were described as in their late teens or 20s. They were wearing dark baggy clothing and hooded sweatshirts with the hoods pulled up over their heads.

Um, they haven't caught the thieves yet, so, actually, it is just speculation about that... maybe they did want the jukebox.

ATMs are heavy as fark. The bottom 2/3 of them are usually a solid block of steel and concrete, specifically just to be heavy enough to complicate the process of picking one up and walking away with it. An ATM is basically some electronics glued onto a safe.

If two or three guys can lift it...it's not an ATM.

/I used to be a mover, and got to move ATMs for legitimate reasons on a number of occasions.

2013-02-22 10:58:58 AM
I tend to think they got exactly what they came for. Full of cash, not bolted to the floor, easier to break into ( has anyone mentioned that yet? ).

Ad the song queue is so long you'll never hear the song you paid for even if you waited two hours. Plus, the staff have a remote to skip songs they don't like.

Now the thing sits on the wall unused as all the locals are wise to the scam and it eventually starved.

Brilliant marketing plan: piss off the people who want to give you money.

or you can be a real arse (like me) and play Echoes, Atom Heart Mother,Innagadadavida long version , and Alice's Restaurant and pay to have them play immediately over everyone elses song. Plenty of time to drink and not have to hear top 40, rap, or any other type of music you don't like.

Not only that. When businesses are closed they always, always empty the ATM. If the jukebox was digital I bet a lot of plays were off a credit or debit card. Maybe some bills but not much.

2013-02-22 01:01:00 PM
I used to have an ATM in my garage.   I bought it from a Savings & Loan that went bust.     I bid $20 (probably too much).   It was on wheels designed I guess to be placed in temporary spots when the real ATM was out or something.     I finally gave it away after it sat around for a few years (though when Kevin Mitnick's lawyer was researching his case (Kevin told him he had to see "The President's Analyst" and also to take my security course for background), I offered to give it to him to show what sort of junk "legal" hackers tended to have around their house (on of the things in the bill of particulars in this case was an ANCIENT credit card terminal, the kind which had long been supplanted with newer ones and you could find for $5 or whatever in the junk stores).

Anyhow, there was a news story in CT where someone sabatoged all the mall ATMs and then placed their own one in the mall, and gave out cash.    They then took the account numbers and pin's down to manhattan and started cleaning out people's accounts.   Of course, EVERYBODY who knew me sent me a copy of that article when it hit the press.

On my phone so I can't trim the quote. ...

I used to work for Loomis, the armored car company and I can say in my experience this isn't true. In fact typically If the location is served by an armored car, then the property owner had zero access to the machine. Typical atms require an rfid based "key" and a one time use combination that is linked to said key. Every time you need to open up the safe portion a new combination needs to be generated by calling in to branch, giving your security phrase, atm id and rfid number.

Long story shorts this is a pain in the ass and it cost money to be able to generate codes (special software, secured network etc). The safe in an ATM is typically of a better grade than most businesses use for their own safe anyways.

The only exception I could think of is if thr atm is served by the property owner and has a traditional tumbler style lock and it's in a bad neighborhood. Even then it takes a lot of time to do the process. On a good day I could empty, reset and refill an ATM in about 15 minutes, but I was well practiced as I would do it 30 times a day. That's more effort than most people would be willing to spend on a daily basis.
