I was 24 years old, and I spent that Friday night playing volleyball with some work friends because I thought the USA had no chance. Especially since they had played that same Russian team in some exhibition matches before the Olympic Games started, and I think the game just before, the Russians had won something like 10-3 at Madison Square Garden. On the way home from the volleyball, I turned on the radio to find out the score, and I just stared at the radio when I heard the US won.

I was not yet 5, and since the earliest dated memory I have is watching new years eve in 1979, I missed this memory by about 9 months.

You realize that 1980 came AFTER 1979, don't you?

wiseolddude: I was around, but even to this day, I have never watched a hockey game.

I was about 10 years old at the time.  I knew it was a big deal, but liked watching football better.

My son watched the movie every night when he went to bed for a solid two years

I was 14.  I didn't watch the game because the Soviets were playing pro players and we were restricted to college players.  Technically, every athlete in the Eastern Bloc was an "amateur."  When I heard that we won, my whole family watched the replay.  We were big time hockey fans who had moved from the Midwest to New Orleans.
