It looks incredible now. I'm also sure he can now look back on the awfulness and laugh with the rest of us.

Ok, he might never be able to do that, but that's still great work. Not to mention the international publicity that parlor will get now. It's seldom that a tattoo artist gets such a positive headline.

Louisiana_Sitar_Club: I have the same question but I'm disingenuously curious.

I went to art school with a lot of illustrators who also apprenticed at tattoo shops. What happened was that the tattoo practice affected their drawing more than the other way around. When they'd submit their drawings for critique in class you can see there was a more steady/delicate hand at work and a sensitivity to the medium than when they had started off that year. We weren't painters so I don't imagine it would have translated that well but the pencil/charcoal/ink drawings were spectacular.

So I've been told. I have heard though that it is painful and expensive. It takes more than one treatment and the results can be less than ideal. There's a doctor (or group of doctors, I forget which) in my area that helps ex gang members and ex convicts by removing their gang and prison tats for free.

I think this dude in the article did the right thing by going for a cover up/fix of the crappy tat. He wanted a tat anyway of his late bride, he just didn't do his research very well from the looks of things. He did better research the second time around, obviously. The artist who fixed it ROCKS, too! Awesome job, especially considering what he had to work with. Now THAT'S talent!

Well, I stressed the 'genuinely' part because I didn't want to come off as sounding like I was saying "Oh yeah, sure, he can do a tattoo, but can he PAINT!?!!"

Good representational artists do share a particular set of skills/talents involving visual perception, focus, and attention to detail. Those skill can be applied to different media (tattoo, painting, whatever) but the artist needs to learn the techniques specific to those media. The techniques of shading, line, etc.... are very similar in tattoo and pen & ink. Acrylic or oil painting would need a different approach. Watercolor could be more or less similar depending on how you did it. But for all of them you would need to understand how light and shadow work.

Then occasionally you get to meet an artist who just glides from one media to another with no effort at all. I have met maybe two or three of those folks out of the hundreds of artists I've known. Most of us have to work at it. I have no doubt that this artist could paint beautifully if he wanted to. Whether he can just automagically be able to paint well if all he knew how to do is tattoo is possible - but not likely.

My husband has been having a large dark tattoo lasered off.

Every time he goes in (every 6-8 weeks) he comes home with what looks like a 2nd degree burn (it bleeds and needs to be bandaged).  It's been over a year and it is much much lighter but still very visible.  He doesn't go in as much as he used to.  Eventually the ink will be gone, but I suspect the scarring will be visible (my husband scars very easily and all of his tattoos look raised) and the scar will be a ghost of the tat (it's a tribal and it's on his back).

Big kudos to the artist, but from 5 feet away, it probably looks like a giant black blob, and in a few years when his skin starts to sag and the ink has become less defined, what's he going to have? A giant black blob, even up close. Is that better or worse than what he had? I don't know.

I'm not a tattoo guy, but I'm kind of tired of looking at all the awful ink that people put on their bodies, which ranges from sad to WTF was he thinking? There's an older guy at my gym who looks like he was in a car fire, but no, it's just that he's covered with an awful blur of tattoos that have all run together now that he's had them for 30 years. If you're building your personality around that shiat, it's just sad.

Don't get me wrong, big props to the artist in every way, especially for doing it for free, but sometimes tattoo people need to know when to say when.

Uh, no?

Mine was uncomfortable more than anything but its a bicep band, which is the least sensitive place evars. I honestly didn't have much or any pain except when the guy did the back of my arm, and I suspected that was more because I couldn't see him than anything.

But I have leather level thick skin, and no bones or stereotypically sensitive spots were involved.

But it doesn't 'hurt and anyone who says otherwise lies'. It's spot, artist (yours sound like they push down a LOT. Do you also scar heavily?), and personal pain tolerance (mine is moderate).

While I don't disagree that the tattoo now represents a significant improvement over the previous tragedy, it appears that there are a lot of farkers who confuse "good art" with "the sort of overwrought, too-aggressive shading that would make even Aubrey Beardsley go, 'Whoah, dude, dial it back a notch, maybe?'"

I'm a very skinny female who has tons of large pieces on my arms, legs, spine, thighs, etc. (all can be covered up) and the only time I've ever experienced any amount of pain was the dull vibration while my spine was being worked on. KatjaMouse: Louisiana_Sitar_Club: I have the same question but I'm disingenuously curious.

Not to mention pencils don't have motors and moving parts in them.  I had a friend who could draw really well that started to apprentice in a tattoo shop...  it took her a while to be able to ink even basic geometric shapes on an orange.  I would imagine it's a picnic for a good tattoo artists to sketch with pencil/charcoal/ink on paper after mastering the control necessary to do it with a gun.

2013-02-22 11:52:19 AM

RedT: Real Women Drink Akvavit: homelessdude: lilplatinum: You could remove the tattoo..

I have no tattoos so I don't know.....but is that not really painful?

What the hell is his problem? Why did he get it in the first place if he was just going to get it mutilated/not-removed-removed in the end anyway? Is he a giant girl's blouse?

I have one on my back. It didn't just hurt. It felt like someone carving up my back with a hot scalpel for a few hours. That's what you get when you have thin skin over top of your spine.

2013-02-22 11:58:04 AM
It looks much, much better. I don't like it, but it's definitely a huge improvement. Overall it's really dark, I imagine because the artist had no choice but to add even more shading to fix the original.

Having a tattoo of what your recently deceased wife will look like when she rises from the dead to eat your brains if kind of the "worst".

Yep, it was supposed to be a tribute to his departed wife, and the mother of his children. The artist butchered it. The guy thought HE messed it up, went back, and the artist butchered it further. The artist should never have taken the job if they didn't know what they were doing, stick to the wall art stencils.

Mr. Cool Ice, like i said earlier, is NOT a bad tattoo. Its what the customer wanted, the artist did a competent job in its technical stand point. And the dude was happy and proud of the work, even after gaining loads of internet notoriety for it, maybe even more so.

Granted, the subject matter looked like something a 12year old would doodle in the margins of their homework that was the most awesome thing EVA!!1! But, its a good tattoo in spite of that.

Cat guys full body tattoo? Not a bad tattoo either, that was his thing and he made his living as a performer with that look, also snake guy. Or the great enigma. The world famous tattooed man.

I've never seen a tattoo look so realistic before.

This one is amazing.

Are they real though?  I mean, who the hell gets tattoos of Teen Wolf and Britney Spears or whoever that is?

Roman Fyseek: kroonermanblack: I still want a new tattoo damnit. Are there any colorful styles out there that aren't 'totally brotastic tribal broseph' level without also being effeminate and/or gay?

If you live on Long Island, I can highly recommend Studio 69 tattoo.  They fixed my 20-year-old disaster:

Damn, that is a good. Been looking for a decent shop for mine, and they're only like two miles from me.

The best shading and depth I think I've ever seen on a tattoo

Too bad the black won't stay that deep once it's fully healed.  Looks awesome though...

I think the fixed tat from TFA looks like someone threw on a sepia tone in Instagram.

It IS a significant improvement. I just don't dig sepia.

Image 18 or 20, the chick has had a giant demonic vagina tatooed on her chest.  Why?  I need an explanation for this.

That doesn't look like a vagina at all, sir.

Cerebral Knievel: Yep, it was supposed to be a tribute to his departed wife, and the mother of his children.

I wasn't trying to call you a puss or anything like that, I was just saying that "it's always going to hurt" isn't necessarily true. It's likely going to hurt, but depending on the location and your pain tolerance the pain can go from 0-10 on the same person. Hell, I've got a big one going from above my knee down to may ankle and that one tat went from .1 to 8.5.
