You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

ZeroCorpse: Laptops are a dying breed. It won't be long before everything is a tablet with an optional wireless keyboard.

Right...

And then, someone will have the novel idea of making a tablet with a hinge, which will attach the keyboard permanently to the screen.   And then you can rest the keyboard on your legs.   But since this would then throw the weight off, we'll put all the components down under the keyboard for the sake of stability.

This is an amazing idea..... what SHOULD we call it?

Google is an advertising company.  They are already a villain.  Just because they make shiny toys that you like doesn't change that fact.

Well, the hinge is the key to that idea, so...Hinge-a-tron!

bingethinker: underwhere: Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: It's less expensive with better specs than the MacBook Air. Headline megafail.

I don't know where you got that from. The closest comparable MacBook Air is the base 13" model for $1199 and it comes with a 128GB ssd. The Chromebook only comes with 32GB and it costs $1399. Maybe I'm not too good at math but it looks like the macbook is both better and cheaper.

Bears repeating.

The Pixel is more underpowered than the Air and more overpriced - it is the superior Apple laptop experience.

/Both suck

And this is the year of the Linux PC.

C'mon, get it right.  It's owned server and embedded for quite a while... and last numbers I saw, mobile as well.

untaken_name: YodaBlues: jaytkay: Sgeo: I can't live without an IRC client

What do the three of you still on IRC discuss?

How BBS going to take the world by storm I hope.

Where to find an mp3 decoder that can handle multi-part MIME posts.

Some channels that I'm in have well over a thousand people, although I don't really talk much in insanely active channels.

Where do all the "cool kids" go these days to chat, exactly? I know USENET seems like it's being replaced by web forms, but you say IRC is dying? Replaced with what, may I ask?

chatroulette? snapchats? Lotus Sametime? twitch.tv? Some other crappy messaging program? Who the hell knows?
So I was using archie so i could gopher some tarballs the other day....
No, seriously...chatting is still a thing? I figured everyone just watched youtube videos and live streams these days. But it's quite possible that's just me.

I always thought the exact phrase was: "The year of the Linux Desktop".

Well, it was... but then laptops sort of kicked desktops in the balls.

Really?  Does that even meet the specs for Windows 8?

Yeah.  I ditched my desktop in favor of a Linux laptop.

Oh, wait, it's not 1997 any more.

/Had Linux laptops for about a decade.
//Midway through that decade, OS X outstripped Linux for usability.
///Still use Linux servers and desktops at work.

Emposter: BigLuca: 12.85 inches, 2560x1700 screen?

[www.visualphotos.com image 700x487]

this is what I was thinking too.  Is there some niche market out there for people who care as much about screen resolution as audiophiles care about what precious metal their plugs are plated with?

Like the Retina MacBook Pro, the UI elements, text, etc are all scaled so you're not looking at super tiny text and icons, just super high res text, icons, etc.

This new ultra expensive chromebook will be as awesome as Google Wave....keep throwing crap against the wall Google, 1 out of 15 of your ideas actually amounts to something (even if the one idea was lifted from Apple).

The one lifted from Apple (the ultra expensive and pointless laptop) won't stick. It doesn't have the fanatical following that Apple has to allow it to shovel shiat and convince people it's gold.
