Hey now, that's unfair. It's only $50/month. I mean, that's the difference between "outrageously" expensive and "are you farking kidding me" expensive.

From TFA: "We've done tons of user testing on this and it turns out it doesn't work. Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical. It gives great demo, but after a short period of time you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. "

Erm, yeah, about that. I've used a touch enabled laptop and I love it. WTF are you talking about apple guy?

I can't live without an IRC client. And Mibbit won't go on Freenode, and IRCCloud's going to cost money eventually if I understand properly, and I don't want to use two different sites for my IRC needs. (I'm also on servers other than Freenode).

I consider myself a tech friendly person, but I can't say I've ever found Chromebooks enticing.  I know there are apps out there for it, but I don't want to be in the cloud for everything.

Aside from that, am I the only one who wonders why Google hasn't merged Chrome/Chromebooks with Android?  Google running two separate app stores is just annoying.

I looked into getting a Chromebook a month or so ago. And yes they are $200, or in my case £200. That's $305, if xe.com is to be believed. I think I'm right in thinking the UK price would included sales tax, when the US adds it on after, but I'm fairly certain there's no 50% sales take in the US to justify the difference.

So to Google, I say fark you, use Bing and search for how exchange rates work. Oh, and pay your UK taxes, if you're going to rip us off like this.

I would have thought you'd be used to paying much more for everything, everything is more expensive over there.

Oh, and if you don't like tax avoidance then you should STFU and fix your own tax code.

I don't know where you got that from. The closest comparable MacBook Air is the base 13" model for $1199 and it comes with a 128GB ssd. The Chromebook only comes with 32GB and it costs $1399. Maybe I'm not too good at math but it looks like the macbook is both better and cheaper.

jaytkay: I thought Chromebooks were $200.

The normal ones are $249.  A retina, er, pixel display, is a $300-$400 add-on for a MacBook Pro, so apparently the touchscreen bits are worth $650-$750.  Or, as improbable as this might sound, you're getting ripped off.

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: It's less expensive with better specs than the MacBook Air. Headline megafail.

Less expensive with better specs?  If only.

To be fair, it  does have a far higher screen resolution than the 13" Air - in fact, its 2560x1700 3:2 display has more vertical resolution than the 13" MacBook Pro (Retina)'s 2560x1600 16:10 display.  And it has a touchscreen, and a price tag $200 less than the 13" Pro Retina.

The Pixel shares a CPU and standard RAM with the 13" Air, and shares a GPU with both the 13" Air and the 13" Pro Retina.

Other than that?  Better specs?  Cheaper?  Not so much.  The Pixel boasts 5-hour battery life, 32GB SSD, dual USB 2.0 ports, Bluetooth 3.0 and Mini DisplayPort.  The Apples claim 7-hour battery life, 128GB SSD, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 4.0, and Thunderbolt - and in the case of the Pro Retina, dual Thunderbolt, HDMI, 8GB of RAM and a 2.5GHz CPU.  The lower-resolution 13" Air is also 6 ounces lighter and $100 cheaper than the Chromebook, and the Pro Retina is only 3.5 ounces heavier.

Will it sell?  Sure.  To different people than the Apples, of course.  The MacBook Pro (Retina) is popular with users of Adobe Creative Suite, video editors, and people who want maximum detail in the limited number of video games the Mac can run.

But Chrome's software selection makes the Mac's look huge, so this Chromebook is going to be mainly about  consumption of content at extremely high resolution (though maybe not much video, since it's not really available at this weird resolution and 1920x1080 would have to be either scaled or letterboxed).

And since the  13" MacBook Pro (Retina) actually does give you a fair bit of stuff for that extra $200 (38% faster CPU, double the RAM, 4x the SSD, etc etc), agnostics may just buy it instead - this Chromebook will likely be most popular with people who actively dislike Apple for whatever reason.  Yet it's a premium product - those who don't feel they need the resolution can still buy a $249 Chomebook.

So congrats, Google - you've just created the perfect laptop for well-off Apple-hating Farkers to masturbate furiously to high-resolution JPEGs in all their glory.

I have one of the new ARM based Chromebooks, and really enjoy it. It's nice when I want something I can type on and I know I'll have net access, and the fact it keeps in sync with my desktop browser is a plus, too. But it was $249, not $1399.

Do I want one of these? Sure, kinda. It's gadget-lust worthy, absolutely. It's good looking hardware, it's got some neat features, and I actually like ChromeOS because nine times out of ten, I really -do- just need a web browser when I'm working mobile. And if I don't, I take out my quad-core i7 beast of a laptop with 16 gigs of RAM and two hour battery life.

But for anything more than say, $600-700? No. Damn. Way.

Right...

And then, someone will have the novel idea of making a tablet with a hinge, which will attach the keyboard permanently to the screen.   And then you can rest the keyboard on your legs.   But since this would then throw the weight off, we'll put all the components down under the keyboard for the sake of stability.

This is an amazing idea..... what SHOULD we call it?
