ryant123: I got pregnant vaginally," she said. "Something else could come in my vagina for a medical test that wouldn't be that intrusive to me. So I find that argument a little ridiculous."

Wow. I don't even know what to say to that.

She's obviously never had the procedure done.  She should get knocked up and try it sometime.

DNRTFA, but I expected this a while back.

The first transvaginal ultrasound is really traumatic and not something someone would look forward to, but the patient might not know what they're getting into.  But!  Traumatize them with it, then tell them that before they can get that abortion, they gotta go through it AGAIN!

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

I don't understand this logic at all. OK, yes, two transvaginal ultrasounds is ridiculous but I'm pretty sure a transvaginal ultrasound is pretty commom to verify a pregnancy in the first trimester. So why do these Republicans keep acting like it's some gotcha to prevent abortions when most pregnant women -- even those who planned their pregnancies -- all have to undergo the same procedure? It's invasive, yes, but slathering some jelly on a woman's belly to see a six-week fetus is something that doesn't happen in real life.

The repubs lost the last election because they pissed off the blacks, the women, the gays and the Latinos. Their own analysis of the election indicated that and they've been talking about nothing else about how they have to reach out to these groups, among others. Today on Fark were stories about how the repubs have come up with new initiatives calculated to piss off women, Latinos and gays. All we need is a story about some teatard saying something stupid about the blacks and maybe a deliberate insult to college students and the the paranoid intolerance trifecta will be complete.

Obstetrician is a job and transvaginal ultrasound wands ain't gonna make themselves. Lube, rubber glove makers, people who wash the hospital gowns that the women get to put on... lots o' jobs. Hell, we should make em get a TVUS wanding once a week for 10 years afterwards just to make sure the baby didn't come back

That's the thing. Normally women don't start pre-natal treatment and / or get an ultrasound until 12 weeks when you can use the jelly.  Most women will never have to get a transvaginal.

Just... Jesus. Once you've been penetrated once, any other penetrations don't matter? Let's all just pile on in there. One penis has been in there, so there is now no number of additional penises which will be considered intrusive.

What? No. Normally women begin prenatal treatment at six to eight weeks and any average obgyn is going to verify a pregnancy at that point with a transvaginal ultrasound after a positive test result from a urine sample. And in some cases, you will have more than one transvaginal ultrasound to make sure there is a heartbeat and the fetus is developing properly. If you're getting an abortion, a doctor will still need to verify there is a fetus with a transvaginal ultrasound so as not to perform an unnecessary procedure.

Why not just shove the probe up there and keep it there for a few weeks or until she changes her mind?

Nah.  At least not mine or any experience of any pregnant woman I've ever met.  And, for the record, I just had a kid less than two years ago. Could be regional things though, but I doubt it.  The general consensus I've always heard is don't start pre-natal treatments until after the first trimester because of the huge risk of miscarriage.  No sense in wasting the money or getting too attached.

How about this:
"If your poop has come out, then would it be not intrusive for penis to go in?  You know, for a medical test.  Checking your prostate for example."

Not common at all.

This is common:

This is not:
Linked in case medical diagrams are considered NSFW

I've had both done.  One was for pregnancy and one was because of a possible tumor.

The regular ultrasound doesn't hurt one bit.  The transvaginal ultrasound was extremely uncomfortable.
I'm sure it would be even worse for a woman that hasn't pushed out two kids like I have.
I could see it being very traumatic for someone who was raped.

This proposal is not entirely surprising and is somewhat understandable. Following criticism of suggesting that women be subjected to one transvaginal ultrasound scan prior to access to an abortion, Republican legislatures naturally assessed the likelihood that the correct response to that criticism be a requirement of two transvaginal ultrasound scans to be 50% (where zero such scans would be the alternative also with a 50% likelihood of being correct). They merely selected the incorrect of two equally probable options.

At this point, I don't know what the Republicans would have to do to drive off their current female voters.  I think most sane women voters that would be upset by this have already jumped ship.

They don't have any problems at all pissing off liberal women, as long as it earns the church-lady loyalty. What, you think the GOP has to reach centrist voters or something? Did you fall asleep in the Eisenhower administration and just wake up?

Because judging other people and pointing at them with a sneer on their faces is what they live for. They really don't understand much beyond that.
