Again? Are they really that bigoted they can't give these people a seat at the table?

2013-02-21 03:26:37 PM
The GOP has gotten so ridiculous that it is impossible to come up with a caricature of it because no one would be able to discern the caricature from the real thing.

Yes?

Why would any self-respecting gay person be a Republican at this point?

/I mean seriously... isn't there some limit to how much these folks will take?

2013-02-21 03:30:20 PM
And yet I fear that all it would take to bring this party-in-tatters back to power is one charismatic person running for President.

Writing. It's on the wall. Why can't you folks see it? Smart people see what is coming down the pike and make adjustments.

Silly Republicans, Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud exist to give your party cover for its bigotry but that's never going to work if you keep banning them from events.

Well, you could omit the word "gay" and it would still be accurate...

They've also invited Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney to speak, so you can see they're very serious about transforming their party.

Again, I would if I felt the party couldn't do a 180 with someone who has a dynamic personality, is good looking and is a smooth talker. Get one of those in the GOP and have him run for President and I fear you'll see this same group of people back in power.

Anecdotal evidence time. I've known about a dozen gay Republicans over the years (several of whom are now Democrats, others consider themselves Republican but voted for Obama this last time around, at my urging). A few of them are ex-military and lean conservative. A few of them are wealthy or self-employed attorneys. One or two are just farking crazy. I got the vibe from many of them, especially the ones I knew in college, that they just got off on being a contrarian.

Exactly right. The reality is that Chris Christie, for example, could win the Presidency. And it would not require a change in the party's base or mentality at all. He'd just have to get through the primaries which, while not easy for him, would certainly not be impossible.

Gays will be well represented at CPAC. Trust me.

Just look at Craigslist M4M and the DC Eagle that weekend.

Power constituents?  Or wait, the committee organizers would generate the power, but then the term power committee doesn't convey it right.  I give up

Ah yes. The GOP. The party of freedom, as long as you're white heterosexual man!

I once met a man at a bar. He was in his 60's, gay, Jewish. This was right before the election & he was going on about how he hated Obama & Romney was so great. I asked him if he was aware of the GOP's stance on homosexuality? He declared he didn't care because he's a small business owner. I said, "So you know that Obama cut your taxes 18 times in the past 4 years?" Boy, he did NOT like that answer at all.

Anyway. Point is. Here's a man who brings up politics to strangers at a bar. Pretty sure he got off on being a contrarian. That may be the common thread here.

They're a small group of fanatical GOP voters. No matter how badly they are treated they will still vote GOP, so the GOP has nothing to gain by letting them attend but a lot to lose if they piss off the millions of 'values voters' who make up their base.

Even if you felt they weren't truly part of your party, their votes are still valuable.

The first rule of politics is to win. Once you've won, you can govern, but not before that. Throwing away votes because you don't like the people casting them is just dumb.

Well, no one's accused the Republicans of being especially shrewd these last 13 years.

2013-02-21 04:27:49 PM
GOP: NO HOMO

Well, that should end the fantasy of the GOP adopting a more modern political plank. Their idea of "outreach" is "will they give us votes?" To that end, they're happy to dissemble to Latinos, until it comes time to actually provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. To that end, they're happy to dissemble to women, until it comes time to actually support women's health and women's rights issues. Tot hat end, they're happy to dissemble to LGBT folks, until it comes time to actually treat them as equals.

The GOP gains nothing by spooking their base, even by letting ardent GOP supporters who happen to be LGBT speak at a GOP function. Besides, what are they going to do - vote Democrat? They're named "GOProud" and "Log Cabin Republicans", so the GOP's pretty sure that their votes are assumed.

It's odd to watch LGBT folks support Republicans, to be honest - it's like watching Rihanna snuggle Chris Brown. I feel a mix of pity and anger over folks that stupid.
