Warning ... Professor John Oxford

Thanks for the warning, article. His appearance is jarring at best.

Even pandemic Spanish flu, the worst modern (last 100 years) pandemic, could only kill a fraction of the people it infected. Even going away from viruses to bacterial infections, Multi-drug resistance and extreme drug resistance can be isolated, and new, novel methods of drug therapy will be developed.

The only way a virus, or bacterial infection is going to wipe out humanity is if it has some help FROM humanity, i.e. it's been engineered to do so.

Speaking of viruses, my computer just crashed.  Thank you gov't issued technology!

No, it's just going to wipe out 90% of the world's population, then all the bad people will go to Vegas and all the good people will go to some farm in the middle of nowhere, then they'll kind of battle it out for the next 400 pages.

Meh; that would be just as likely as getting hit by a train, after winning the lottery, while unicycling in a rainstorm on the 29th of February.

Headline from TFA:

Could a deadly virus wipe out earth?

I think it's unlikely a virus would cause the planet itself to crumble.

I thought we were panicking over Chinese cyber-warfare this week? I've unplugged all my electronics and locked them in the basement so they won't attack me.
I don't have any room left down there for germs & viruses!

Answer: No. Rocks, dirt and saltwater oceans are not affected by any virus.

M-O-O-N. Yup, that spells deadly virus.

2013-02-21 04:21:23 PM
Then again, humanity could be wiped out from a gigantic asteroid strike, a neutron star coming too close, a supervolcano exploding...
But they're all unlikely to happen within our lifetime, so I wouldn't worry that much about a virus wiping out enough of humanity to cause humans to die off and become extinct.

I don't know about that.  I defer to your medical experience (presumed on my part), but lets talk science for a minute.  The flu is not going to wipe out the world.  Not anymore.  But what about a form of naturally evolved, drug resistant, airborne plague?  There are more than a few viruses that excel at tearing apart human bodies.  All we need is for one of those to gain the ability to spread quickly, and the world is over long before the WHO declares an emergency.

But you are right, that's most likely to happen because people did it.  Damn, that's terrifying.

I need to go whimper a little.

Eh, with 7+ billion living, breathing petri dishes, it amazes me somewhat that nothing has evolved to wipe us out already. Even without mad-scientist help.

If Ebola-Zaire, for instance, killed a little slower and spread a little easier we'd be screwed as a species.

Viruses are hard to cure. Don't plan on a new vaccine or anti-viral to save you if worst comes to worst.

To all those people who don't wash their hands with hot soapy water, who don't cover their mouths when sneezing or coughing, thank you. You will kill many people who are better than you. Thank you. Snuffing out innocent lives while trying to demonstrate how crude you can be is a wondrous thing. Thank you. Your parents would be proud of you.

I'll take reservations from Farkers on a first-come-first-served basis for a chartered plane to Madagascar, if my research into pandemic viral spread means anything.
