"People have a pathway to citizenship right now: It's to abide by the immigration laws, and if they have a family relationship, if they have a job skill that allows them to do that, they can obtain citizenship," Goodlatte said. "But simply someone who broke the law, came here, [to] say, 'I'll give you citizenship now,' that I don't think is going to happen."

Well, there's your proof that he actually does not know how the immigration system works. If anyone has been living here illegally for more than 365 days, they are barred from receiving legal immigration for ten years after leaving the United States.  So unless he's seriously saying that every one of the 11 million undocumented immigrants who's been here for more than a year should leave the country for ten years, wait, and then apply in the hopes that they can get a (highly limited) visa.... well, he's not offering any damn solution at all.

So, fark that guy.

Don't forget angry white women. I know it's hard to conceive of how women could support a party so hostile to women's rights, but they do exist and some are just as filled with impotent rage as their husbands.

They do a weird mental trick where they assume only "those" women will lose their rights.  I've seen it in action before and it's truly a sight to behold.

Right. And "those women" are just shrill, bra-burning feminists who probably just want to have abortions and hate men. If they would just submit to God and their husband they wouldn't need rights. Good, wholesome, upper-middle class Christian white women like us don't need rights since our husbands will love & protect us like Christ loved the church.

/yes, I'm being slightly sarcastic and exaggerated, but it's actually fairly similar to the real mindset of lady WASPs of the GOP.

They are really going to drive the GOP short bus over the cliff, damn.  I remember as recently as 2007 when people were saying Republicans are so much better at messaging and winning elections that the game was essentially over.  Now their whole party is going to get wiped off the face of the map

Cool can we make it so that every person who over stays their visa can't renew theirs and must get deported to? You know the approximately 50% who make up the illegals in the US, including those who did 9/11.

Oh I forget Republicans don't care about those people just Mexicans.

There's something to be said for not encouraging the moral hazard of rewarding illicit behavior but we're not gonna be able to deport all 11,000,000 illegal residents. Whether they should get a path to citizenship is questionable but the ability to contribute to society (and taxes) should be there for them.
Once we have that taken care of, we can work on reforming the process and making it easier for work visas and for skilled workers to immigrate without regard for nation of origin.

FTA: The so-called "path to citizenship" is a centerpiece of legislation proposed by the White House and by a bipartisan Senate group working on the issue. Both plans would allow undocumented immigrants to first gain a provisional legal status that lets them work, then apply for a green card and eventually citizenship after learning English, U.S. history, and civics, and paying fines and back taxes. Under the White House's plan, immigrants would likely have to wait at least eight years before they could apply for a green card and another five years for citizenship.

I'm sorry, I've having some trouble understanding what's wrong with this proposal. It's not as if Paco Pico Piedra gets his voter's registration card the day after this thing passes. Is it the lack of scourging with glass-embedded ropes? The idea we're not having each illegal immigrant stand up during the Superbowl Halftime Show and renounce his country of origin while doing a Busby Berkeley routine in spats and cummerbund? Can someone help me out here?

I wonder if we'll start to see the 90% lopsided support for Democrats from the Hispanic population that we do from the African-American population.  Given the size of the Hispanic population in some states, and its continued growth as a percentage of the electorate, that could make for a very long stint outside of national office for the Republicans.

They've already got the back end covered with their stance on abortion, but I wonder how long it'll be until Republicans start proposing cash handouts for men who sire rural white boys (women and girls don't count, since you're all sinning trollops who may lean Democratic).

While people are/have been waiting decades for legal immigration processes to work, they are having families and children--their children are already citizens by jus soli. Its simply not possible to adequately address these facets as if they were isolated--earned legal status and immigration process reform need to occur together because they are interrelated facets of the same general tangled problem. If the first part is addressed only, there will be no perceived advantage to address the second part separately. I suspect the reverse is true as well.

Bears repeating.

Think about how that would play out.  We're going to just round up a few million men, women, and children? Inevitably you're going pick up some Americans in your dragnet.

Then we'd have to hire KBR to build camps to house them all.  And then what - ship them across the border?

It's a dumb idea today; it'll look really nutty thirty years from now. Do we want to write that into history?

Or just based on fairness.  We're rewarding those who crossed the border illegally by making it easier for them to get legal status than those who remained behind and tried to do it through the existing legal channels.

I seem to recall a round table discussion on NPR some time ago stating that the current laws in place wouldn't need any changes- it is just that the immigration people are understaffed, causing backlogs that create this mess. Anyone have any insight into this?

You know what?  Fark it!

Open up the border, let everyone one in who wants to come in!  Everyone gets automatic citizenship.

Seriously, I have YET to hear anyone who supports immigration reform actually give a solution to illegals coming in.  Amnesty didn't work with Reagan, it sure as hell isn't going to work this time.  So who cares?  Just ignore the farking problem.
