theorellior: I've wondered if it would work (in small doses) as an aid for people working outdoors in cold weather. It's basically the mechanism your body uses to generate heat for homeothermy, except in wholesale quantities.

If it makes you sweat, it'll just make you colder later.

The funny thing is this is the only possible mechanism for ALL the "weight loss supplements" which claim to "burn fat without exercise, without changes in diet".  Well where do all those kcal go??  You're not peeing out fatty glop so it's gotta be burned and conservation of energy would apply.  And it's no small amount- a lb of fat is equivalent to your total energy usage for about 1.75 days.

While energy is lost to the environment as "work" (lifting things, moving air), most isn't.  Between essential metabolic steps and internal motions, almost all the energy becomes body heat.

The body will die if the internal temperature deviates much from 98.6F.  Flushing of the skin, sweating- a very noticeable side effect- only increases the dissipation of heat marginally.

So a claim of "a lb of fat melts away every week" does not pass muster.  The body would have to utilize 25% more energy and dissipate 25% more heat... "somehow".  With no side effects??

Dude, I don't know why, but anytime I hear about someone calling 911 because they're hurt, then hearing that they died later...It just seems so creepy to me. Maybe more sad than creepy, I don't know.

But yeah, sad for the guy. He was only 18. People that age are technically adults, but there's no "smartness" switch that gets flipped on on your 18th birthday. So pretty much, he made a stupid mistake. Most mistakes serve as lessons on what not to do again, then there are mistakes (like this one) where you get no second chance.
