So they're going with the NBC Olympics model.  Good choice.

Old news, I remember being at work in 2010 and have all the games going because I was the only one in an office with 5 computers.

This just in: broadcasting companies don't spend billions on rights fees to give it away for free.

Oh, man - this is an outrage. I can't believe that they'd want to offer the games to their paying customers. It will be so horrible either having to log in or to go to my local pub.

Sounds great, but because of seeing games last year on TruTV, I now know what Lizard Lick Towing is, so it's not all good.

Awwww that's not nice... Ron's a big sweet guy.

/I've never seen the show, I used to work for an office that used LLT for repo jobs.

We seem to be getting close to the point where folks stop pretending this is about the availability of streaming content and start admitting they just don't want to have to pay for their shiat.

Wow. Since a newspaper writer from over 100 years ago said it, that proves I have wasted my life being a basketball fan. Thank you for showing me, and all of the Fark Sports Tab Commenters, the light.

If fairness to him, it was pretty boring back before someone figured out to cut the bottoms out of the peach baskets.

just a matter of time until all major sports events are either a) on cable, especially ESPN, or 2) pay per view.

i cancelled my cable over a year ago due to my addictive nature...i was spending waaaay too many hours in front of the tv.  At first it pissed me off that so many major sports events (bowl games, march madness)  were not on the networks...now i'm like "meh, i'll go to a sports bar, or go watch it with my dad."

At least CBS won't be tape-delaying the big games for 14 hours.

This is the same as it was last year, except that they are giving you four hours of free TV for people who refuse to pay for cable.

If you refuse to pay for cable, that's on you. I don't see why people think Turner should pay all that money to the NCAA for rights to broadcast something then give it away to people who don't subscribe to their channels.

And if you don't have cable, you don't care about college basketball anyway, so tough shiat.

I thought that happened when people decided to steal House of Cards instead of paying Netflix $8 a month.

For me, it's more about the "whole hog" aspect of it.

Last year they let you stream all the games on mobile devices for $5. I'm more than happy to pay that. But I'm not going to become a cable subscriber and pay $60 a month just because I want to stream the NCAA games.

Same problem with WatchESPN...if that was a standalone service for $10 a month, I'd be all about it. But I'm not going to pay $60 a month because I want to watch a handful of sports events that I can still watch if I go to a buddy's house or a pub.

BZZT! NOPE!

Last year, non-cable subscribers (or the hundreds of thousands of cable subscribers not with one of the major cablecos) could pay $3.99 for March Madness on Demand.  I know this because I paid it. Like hundreds of thousands of other people did.

This year,  nope.  If you don't pay for full cable/satellite (or your cable company doesn't get the whole login procedure right), there's no amount you can pay to CBS/Turner/the NCAA to watch it directly.

Or, I could stream it illegally from any of a hundred sites and save my $4 (I'd pay a little more than that, even).  Your call, NCAA.

2013-02-21 04:17:30 PM
It used to be pretty sweet getting two affiliate feeds from two different markets in HD and one additional x.2 SD feed all OTA.

But I understand. They have to pay these kids after all.

yes but if you let consumers purchase a la cart then how would espn extort $5 from every cable subscription.

Once again, fark RCN.  I guarantee they aren't a part of this, just like they aren't a part of WatchESPN or BTN2Go.  Not sure why I stick with them other than I'm too lazy to switch.  Ah well, once I move and need NFL Sunday Ticket I'll leave it all behind...just to lose signal constantly from shiatty satellite.

What does it matter anyways, when a top four seed will win it anyways? Or either Duke or Kentucky.

Chances are, there will be at least one top-4 seed that doesn't make it through the first weekend.  There will also be a few top seeds who get a cakewalk to the sweet-16 when other top seeds get knocked off.

/anyways

Because blocking all sports sites is clearly not an over reaction by some idiotic exec who read too many "companies lose hundreds of millions of dollars during march madness" stories.

And seeing as we're all posting on fark, it's not like we aren't already slacking. So don't pretend you're some saint who's never zoned out at work.
