My GF took a trip to Belgium, and brought two of these (Westvleteren) back. They were pretty good, but not as good as a solid American domestic, like Miller Lite. I mean, we could have been drinking it at the wrong temperature--I got them as cold as I could in the freezer, but didn't want the bottles to shatter and ruin the beer. I'd be nice if they had a sticker or something that changed color when it was cold enough. Or maybe I need to drink it out of a glass next time, instead of straight from the bottle.

Dumbass. You gotta funnel that stuff, man. Or mix it 50/50 with lemon-lime soda like they do in Germany.

Belgian beer IS good, but doesn't merit the cult-like douchebaggery of the beer snobs. No style does.

And by the way, all those hoppier than thou IPAs still suck.

GOD YOU PEOPLE ARE SO STUPID

The only proper way to drink beer is on the rocks. With a straw. And don't forget the maraschino cherries.

And anyone who produces an "authentic Belgian imperial stout IPA" really needs a kick in the cock.

I'd be wary drinking anything offered to me by a cult.

You mean a cult can allow alcohol and still serve as a force of good? Did you hear that, nudge-nudge-wink-wink, Utah?

A store near me got 40 cases of that stuff, which they apparently never export or really even distribute in any significant way. They held a lottery to see who got to buy it.

/people sold empty bottles on ebay for $8 and up

I dunno, some cults aren't so bad.

0/10 - Wow we have beer trolls now?

It's one of the few Belgian trappist beers I've not tried. I can really recommend the Orval Tripel and Chimay's and Rochefort's beers (Rochefort 10 is a ludicrous 11.3%, but tastes great). Wonderful, wonderful.

False; Belgian beer is the best in the world, and it merits a truly astronomical level of douchebaggery.

I like it, the Quadrapel is very nice. I like many others, but the main draw is that it is very good and it is (relatively speaking) rare.

\\ so . . . yeah.
\ still have 2 in the fridge, one Blonde and one 8.

Why exactly do you find that ludicrous? Srong beligums are often in that range.

Omagang is wonderful at a slightly lower price. Belgian, but made in Cooperstown.

Nonono, he's mistyped that to get past the Fark filters--the ones that pretty much block any unprintable word like "shiat", "fark", "coont", and "beligum". :D

Agreed. Hops are great and all, but when a beer tastes the same as eating hop pellets it's gone too far.

She denounces the hype surrounding Westvleteren, arguing that the St. Bernardus ale she sells is every bit as delicious.

"You can buy a T-shirt with Lacoste on it, or a T-shirt at the supermarket," she said. "But it's basically the same T-shirt."

Women...

IPA hate is hilarious hate. There are plenty of well-balanced, yet very hoppy IPAs.

St. B ABT12 is good enough for me, for the times when I actually want to drink a 10+ abv brew, which is rare.

Beer cult? I picture a group of thick glassed hipsters loudly expounding the virtues of some obscure micro-brew.

2013-02-21 08:01:35 PM
I've still got two bricks still kicking around from the release they did last fall. I bought three, but had to drink one. Tasty stuff, but probably overprice.

I have a six pack in the closet, if in 6 months I can't triple my money I will drink the well aged beer and be content.

Westvleteren 12 is very good. However, St. Bernardus abt 12 is the same beer, save for either brewery's proprietary yeast, and is obviously infinitely more available. Much like just about every other unobtainium beer out there, Westy 12'a appeal is exaggerated due to its rarity.

2013-02-22 10:52:32 AM
I would love to try that beer, but none of the cases that shipped to the Total Wine stores near me ever made it to the shelf.

2013-02-22 12:27:12 PM
The Rochefort 10 is much better, cheaper, and easier to get a hold of (probably on a shelf near you). Had the Westy 12 several times, including a 1997 vintage. Good stuff, but nothing beats the Rochefort 10.

+1 for Roch 10
