Astaire insisted that his films always show the footwork. He also preferred one take, but that wasn't always possible.

I've never understood the appeal of tap dancing. It's nothing but annoying clompy sounding racket to me.

ReapTheChaos: I've never understood the appeal of tap dancing. It's nothing but annoying clompy sounding racket to me.

For me, the appeal is the amount of rhythmic sound they produce while just effortlessly moving around.  When they are moving together, unless they are doing over the top flourishes, their heads stay level while they dance but their feet are going to town, stepping in time.

What made these two great, in my opinion, and it doesn't have to be yours, is that they made it look like it took no skill.  True genius isn't showing how hard something is but, rather, taking something hard and making it look easy.

Don't confuse this with Flatfoot dancing.

/I'm usually a lurker but I love these dancers and this thread.
