It doesn't sound like Jenny has a problem with Staples, it sounds like she has a problem with the idiot who got her a practically useless gift card.

Not to go around white knighting idiots but I doubt the gift giver had any idea a Staples gift card can't be used at Staples.com.  I mean, seriously, in this day and age you can probably buy gift cards for the local toothless hooker down on 3rd and Main and she would have a way of accepting it.  But a company that moves $20 billion worth of stuff a year can't figure out how to do it...

I'm not being snarky, but usually when I buy someone a gift card, I make sure they can use it.  I'm sure there's more to this story than being expressed on the usually passive-aggressive Consumerist though.  She probably got it as a company reward or something of that nature.  Staples gift cards don't come off as a particularly personal gift.

I once got a gift card for AMC theaters that someone bought me at the local Walgreens. Only problem, the closet AMC is 100 miles away.

My parents gave me an Office Depot gift card for Christmas last year.  I immediately wondered what I did to piss them off.

I recently used a Best Buy giftcard to purchase an Amazon giftcard.

Anyone who buys a staples gift card is pretty much an idiot at this point.  I regularly buy supplies for both home and office, and since I have a staples right around the corner, I am constantly cross-referencing the prices vs. both internet and other brick and mortar stores.  To this day, hundreds of products, I have never found a product that wasn't marked up to highway robbery levels.  Unless you REALLY NEED THAT BOX OF PAPER RIGHT NOW there is almost no financial reason you should ever be buying from Staples.  Almost every product I have seen can be found for half the price if you are willing to wait 2 days for shipping from anywhere else on the net.

...and you know its coffee time when you poke someone for a mis-type and include one in your own response.

I got a Staples card from Verizon for upgrading. Should have picked a different store. Learned after placing an order I'd have to go to the store.

Also, they won't let you buy other gift cards with your gift card.

Had a hundred dollar Staples card and they wouldn't let me buy five twenty dollar ones with it.

Did you buy the extended warranty and let geek squad install it for you?

Staples won't accept gift cards on phone orders, either.  But you can use an in-store kiosk terminal to order online and use a gift card.  Obviously, they want people to come into their stores.  IDK why.

This. Why isn't she pissed off at the moron who bought her a gift card for a store that's 60 miles away from her?

StrangeQ: Solution: stop buying farking gift cards.  If you can't think of anything creative, use cash.

In the grand scheme of gift giving, cash has always been the least thoughtful of them all. As an example, I gave my son and his gf gift cards to a local restaurant and movie theater for xmas. At least that way I knew they would have an evening out. Had I gave them cash it would have most likely went in their gas tank or whatever else their next expenditure happened to be.

That's great and all but how are they gonna get to the restaurant and theater when their car runs out of gas?

Cash is always safest.  I gave my ex-wife a Mother's Day present:  a gift certificate for a maid service. Caught holy hell for implying she was a shiatty housekeeper.

/next year, I just had Junior make Mom a card
