(The New York Times)   Billboard has revised its Hot 100 formula to include YouTube plays, which is good news for garbage like the "Harlem Shake" and bad news for music fans   ( divider line

Does this mean Rick Astley is going to pop onto the charts from time to time?

SlothB77: So if a video of a cat singing gets a shiateload of views, is Billboard going to count the cat?  Where do they draw the line between legit artists and nonartists?

But enough about Ke$ha.

How does this work for YouTube?  Is YouTube going to tell them which hits sourced from US ISPs?  Or are they going to pretend any hit on .com counts as a US hit?

If I watch a Doctor Who fanvideo that uses a One Direction song, will that count as a hit for the song even though I don't like the song and didn't want to listen to it?

/I'm looking at you, Sherlock fanvideos that use Taylor Swift songs
//Seriously, WTF

Jim_Callahan: You don't get to randomly declare your shiat a completely new genre every time someone throws in a measure with a different time signature or blows a whistle over a beat.

People have been doing this for 50 years. The only thing the Internet has done is made it more accessible.

nameofperson: Trap is actually a subgenre of hip hop, (southern if I recall correctly)

Bass music proper.

Bass music tends to go in 3-5 year cycles where it reinvents itself, blows up with a massive commercial hit, falls back down to obscurity, and then rises again a few years later. All told, it's done this five times in the last 30 years. Observe:

85-89 - Dirty South (2 Live Crew - Me So Horny)
91-96 - Miami Bass (Tag Team - Whoomp There it is... and then later on, Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out)
99-05 - Crunk (Lil Jon - Get Low)
07-10 - Moombahton (don't think this ever had a commercial hit but Afrojack was caned a lot in the clubs)
12-13 - Trap (Baauer - Harlem Shake)

(note: the years are just approximations of most feverish production and attention, not indications of the actual lifespan of the genres)

(note2: I'm leaving out splinter scenes and genres like technobass and ghettotech to keep things simple, and also audio bass and nu bass. Don't think I'm leaving anybody out. I's gots mad love for Rick Ross)

sure haven't: Subby, this is a good thing.

Gangnam Style and Rebecca Black's Friday are some of the most heard songs on earth. By definition they should be on top of the charts. Love it or hate it, that's reality.

But shouldn't "Final Countdown" by Deep Sunshine also be on that list?

Quick, summon Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's track "Thrift Shop" was once again the most-downloaded track of the week, with 412,000 sales. But with the arrival of "Harlem Shake," it falls to No. 2 on the Hot 100.

This has to be the worst-ever 1-2 punch at the top of Billboard's charts, and that says a lot.

WTF Indeed: It's the Hot 100. There hasn't been proper music on that list in 10 years.

Yeah. Go back a few more years and you see really good music on the Hot 100. Like in 1997 when MMMBop was on there or, even better, 1996 when Macarena was on top of the list.
