Headline confused me because if you ask the Boston papers it's the Boston cardinal who's a leading candidate. Boston's current cardinal replaced the one who presided over the sex abuse scandal.

In no possible way is Dolan a leading candidate for anything.

The Catholic church is going to be hard-pressed to find a cardinal/archbishop who hasn't headed a diocese with manboylove going on in their parishes...

To find out if there was enough of it?

How is this ironic? It's the Catholic Church. Finding out a leader in the church was involved in child sexual abuse is par for the course.

There will never be an American Pope.

Technically any Catholic male could be Pope.  I say we nominate a Kennedy.  What could possibly go wrong?

2013-02-21 12:12:41 PM
If they'll support my self-nomination, I'll convert to Catholicism.

I can attest that I never participated in the molesting or covering up of molesting of underage individuals. Every person I touched was at least 18. And female.

You are woefully unqualified.

... and you got me. Point taken though.  I will offer this bit of thoughtful dialogue: how far are the Catholic Priests from being able to marry? Because I think that would be the safest end to all this madness.  But what do I know?

My folks' "guy" got excommunicated.

Of course, they don't want to break tradition

It's like saying that Santorum was a leading candidate for President.

Oh, he's absolutely in the running to be Pope.  The College wants nothing more than a scandal-plagued American who was created a cardinal last year.

2013-02-21 12:26:10 PM
I love the 'leading candidate' idea. Rumormongering at its finest.

Once the selection process begins it the cardinals have minimal contact with the outside world until the process is complete. Therefore, welcome to the rumor mill.

Oh great, that's all we need. An upside down pope mobile mostly submerged with a drowned corpse stuffed in the back.

Ironic? No

If a business who built fire extinguishers burnt down, that would be ironic.

WTF Indeed:

Everyone thinks their local Cardinal is the leading candidate to become Pope.

Father, we pray for your protection and guidance over our Holy Fitzy, Pope Larry Darnell Fitzgerald I. Give him strength and wisdom to stand as a target for our QB. May he be a light in darkness around which we gather in hope. We ask you to bring about a playoff run through his faithful running of routes and ability to go vertical and make impossible catches. Grant him speed and care to live the gospel in love and service to all of Cardinal Nation. Let him follow in the path of Dierdorf, Trippi, Warner, Werhli, and Wilson, who, filled with the talent, are either in Canton or likely to enter, that the NFL writers called or will call upon his name.

Haven't the Piskies lost something like 60% of their members in the past two decades? Getting poached by megachurches and the Catholics' Anglican Ordinariate because the leadership is promoting an "Anything Goes!" morality to the point that there's no reason to show up anymore?

2013-02-21 12:45:12 PM
Screw this Pope wannabe in the bung hole and his whole farking organized crime family, too.

2013-02-21 12:45:40 PM
Dolan is one of the more prominent cardinals and actually is a legitimate candidate, but they'd probably go with the Canadian guy if they were going to go North American. Which wouldn't be surprising, said Canadian speaks something like 7 languages, fits right in theologically, and has close ties to the Vatican administrative body, which means he interacts with other important cardinals a lot.

I'm pulling for him, just because I want a papal declaration on which of Canada's hockey teams god really favors.

2013-02-21 12:45:51 PM
I don't think this would be an exceptional situation among the cardinals, just a minor problem.

Schoolteachers can get married. We hear about new sex cases with under agers every single day involving teachers.

The celibate priesthood is not the issue. Filtering out the creeps is.
