It's just weird that everything is a cause for controversy now. When I was in high school in the late 90's, I wore a skate shirt that had a guy flipping the bird on it. My history teacher asked me to go to the restroom and turn it inside out, so I did, and then I moved on with my life.

You were told not to wear a sexually suggestive shirt, get over it. It's not worth outrage.

Friend of mine caught some heat in the mid-80s wearing the Tommy Toilet Says (http://deniskitchen.com/Merchant2/graphics/^A/SP_tommy.B G.jpg) shirt to school. So he and three others got together and put one big letter each on four white t-shirts, and walked down the hall in formation.

Oh, come on! This is hypocrisy; that T-Shirt is not saying anything explicit. It is warning people of the dangers of drunk-driving (or parking too). Besides, how many among us didn't get his/her first drink of liquor during the teen years? Even Harry Potter got his first Deathly Hang-over.

During his junior year of high school, the post office released a stamp featuring Elvis Presley. My husband wore a shirt with a photo of that stamp to school, and because he went to a small Christian school, they made him change. Elvis being a secular musician, you see, despite his Gospel background. He thought it was ridiculous and silly (and of course it was), but he changed and went on about his day. I wonder if that small Christian school would have permitted this girl's shirt.

I have a kid in elementary school now. It's public school, so kids are free to wear whatever they want. We send him to school in denim pants and tough cotton sweatshirts. It's just not worth it to send him in anything that costs more than a few bucks because it all gets torn to shreds by the end of the week.

We spent a Saturday with one of his classmate's family and they were surprised when they met him in non-school clothes. He wasn't dressed up, but his clothes weren't the bargain bin rags we send him to school in. Burberry, Lacoste, etc. Just normal everyday wear.

When it all comes down to it, clothes are only there to cover you up and protect you from the elements. Putting a large placard on your shirt to advertise yourself just gives people the opportunity to prejudge you. Wear what you want, but don't complain if people react badly to your clothes if it says something that people may be upset by.

Her point is that the shirt suggests the opposite of sex: abstinence. To her, it's a religious belief. So her rights are being trampled.

She fails to see that she has no right to scold her peers. If she wants to wear, "I'm A Virgin," that's fine with me. But not, "I'm A Virgin And YOU should be one too!"

I was in middle school from, I guess 95-97 or something around there. I had a "No Fear" shirt that had a picture of a rooster and a kitty and the rooster was saying "pussy" and the kitty was saying "cock" and it was no problem.
In HS (98-01) I was even able to wear a Bud light shirt. Bud Light sponsored the California State Mountain Bike Championship Series and you got a shirt with every race you entered. So I had a lot o race shirts that had a huge Bud light logo on it, they were the main sponsor. Now, that bud light shirt was explicitly against the rules, but since I had such good grades and was disabled I had a lot of lee way to do what I want.
