Fark needs a tent there.

Poor Billy Idol. Only slightly ahead of Dwight Yoakam

My girlfriend wants me to go with her with her friends. The music sounds great and all that, but I'm not in the mood to drive out to bumfark Tennessee and stay out in a tent. To paraphrase Danny Glover, "I'm getting too old for this shiat". Thoughts?

Trixie Whitley

Cool - I'm a big fan of her father, and she plays guitar just like he did.  I hope she's good live.

2013-02-20 09:37:23 PM
Paul McCartney, Mumford and Sons, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Is Bonnaroo playing in a retirement home this year?

2013-02-20 09:40:07 PM
The only two on that list I've seen are Bjork and Pretty Lights. I would recommend catching Pretty Lights live, they're quite good.

You can tell a lot about a writer who calls Mumford and Sons a "must-see" while leaving Weird Al out of that category.

I treat camping like 7-Up.  Never have, never will.

Whenever there is a mention of  A$AP Rocky I can't help but think:

1) Jesus Christ he sucks
2) Aesop Rock >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>100 A$AP Rocky

I am not sure I could get that time but ...

- Billy Idol
- Wu Tang
- Nas
- Sir Paul
- Wilco
- Weird Al
- Walk the Moon

Downside: Tennessee ...

The Gaslight Anthem? Mumford? Okay, you have my attention.

2013-02-20 10:29:19 PM
Pretty Lights, Weird Al... I'm in.

/Too old for that shiat. But it looks fun.

fusillade762: Pretty Lights

Also I would recommend checking out his soundcloud page here so you can listen to his weekly radio show-
http://soundcloud.com/prettylights/sets/pretty-lights-the-hot-sh-t/

And you can use this to download them-
http://soundcloud-download.com/

64 and 65 were really good, 61-63 he kind of went crazy and played some really odd random stuff. His music is great for a party, pop it on and let it roll.

I went last year for my first time and absolutely loved it.

So much so that I bought VIP tickets this year before the lineup was even announced.  The atmosphere down there is so relaxing and I've never met a crowd of people just so damn friendly, seriously the first day we had dudes offering us any drug we could name for free, it was nuts.

/Fark Meetup at the Roo?
//Inforoo has all the dirt you need to know how to prep for Bonnaroo.

Any Farkers going to Firefly in DE this summer?

Looks like a great lineup.

The Haberdasher: Weak sauce

About the only act I'd be even a bit interested in is Weird Al, only because he's been part of my life since I was a young teenager and has brought me a lot of pleasure over the years. Everything else I'm either yuck, meh, or who? on...sigh.

This statement does not parse.

/Finds it incredibly hard to relax around people who are way too altered to be out without a sitter.
//Maybe that is just me... I've just dealt with too many people who don't understand boundaries or the concept of personal property when very altered.

A lot of the festivals recently have basically been 90% the same as every other one.

This year's Bonnaroo looks absolutely amazing. A little something for everyone, and Weird Al Yankovic pushes it over the top.

It's almost like the lineup generally appeals to people under 40 and the modern generation of music.

There are people there like that, yes, but they aren't the majority, and not everyone is high.   What wasn't there, and was much appreciated was the "brah" crowd.

Shadow Blasko: /Finds it incredibly hard to relax around people who are way too altered to be out without a sitter.

I went in 2004 and 2005 (I think) and it wasn't that bad.  I get fairly claustrophobic in crowds and didn't get the heebie-geebies, even being surrounded by people on every conceivable substance known to man.  It was a little surreal the first year, driving past what felt like a third world bazaar of all kinds of drugs.  I never knew how popular nitrous oxide was before then.

/Went to go in 2006 but my girlfriend's (now wife) grandfather passed away when I was 3/4 of the way down and I had to turn around.
//My friends that made it down ended up having their tents and cars broken into, so at least I missed that.

Plus I got to watch a girl in rainbow brite socks and a g-string dance through all of Radiohead.

And this was the kind of girl you wish would go around naked, not some ham elemental summoned by the wiccans.

Nice...

I've been to more than a few big festivals, just... I dunno, my tolerance for people who use being on molly or tripping, or whatever as an excuse to gladhand others, or "accidentally" fall through your $500 REI tent has gotten really low.

Maybe a positive experience is just what I need to correct that problem. I just worry that a negative one would cement it forever.

I think the key to that is to camp with people you know.   Considering you have a double row of cars inbetween the tents and the walkways, you tend to have less randoms tripping into your things.   We got lucky and had this couple from Boston next to us that are in their 30's and about as non-crazy as us.   Then we hooked up with this group from Buffalo that was full of responsible drug users and had similar interests in shows, so we weren't solo the whole time.

We're trying VIP this year, most for the air conditioning and real bathrooms, with how the weather has been this past year I'm worried this years show is going to be really really miserably hot.

The one thing Bonnaroo does well is water, it's free, plentiful, and self serve.   Plus they have a large water fountain for people to play in and cool off.  They've also been planting a bunch of trees around the "farm" to provide more shade during the shows.

20+ years of renaissance festivals. Staying hydrated and "cool enough for what you are doing" is something I could give clinics on.

Sounds like a good time though. I've just been through a rough patch, between issues at with friends being assaulted, robbed, or just waking up to strangers in their tents... It starts to wear thin. I have not given up though.

Portugal. The Man and Cat Power are two who I hope really break out here.

So I started listening to Four Tet and Banshee since people were saying they're your best bet for EDM and Rock respectively.   I really enjoy Four Tet for how slow and low beat it is.   Banshee is.....operatic metal?  I dunno, I'm trying to give them a shot.

I've seen his standup before in Nashville. Tosh.O is a terrible representation of how funny he actually is.

fusillade762: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Is Bonnaroo playing in a retirement home this year?

My lawn, get off of it.
I never judge an act by the age, but by the talent and show. In this case, although I have not seen Tom live as it has always been a bad time for the past 30 years when he has played- I have heard nothing but good things about the shows.

2013-02-21 02:20:48 AM
Between Tennessee and Live Nation, they can both go fark themselves in a pit of rodent shiat.

I love Dwight Yoakam. Im a huge fan and have been for years. I also went to bonnaroo in 03. But Yoakam being on the bill is such a wtf. Its like the festival is trying to appeal to.....oh no im old!

Why would you bring a $500 tent to a music festival?

ExpressPork: oh no im old!

I went to go see Widesread Panic at a Mexican resort (Panic en la Playa). I used to go to WSP shows with nothing more than my tix, some cash, a fistful of drugs and a 3 day boner. These days I need cabana boys, boat drinks and an all inclusive menu of bad sushi to go with three days of tripping balls!

You're the guy in the blue hat in the front row staring at what I can only imagine is the bass player off on the far right of the stage.

Would love to see Tom, Weird Al, Lumineers, Tame Impala, Björk, Wu-Tang, ZZ Top and so many more...

John Bigboote is leaving disappointed.

A lot of the people I knew who went to this every year were such giant assholes that I can only imagine the festival is nothing but assholes.

Maybe they got beaten and killed by everyone else there. I dunno.

Zzzzzzzzzzz

I'm done with music festivals. After many trips to VooDoo and ACL, I've grown tired of the "the band just started, time to light up!" Mentality.

I don't care if you get high, just don't blow your gdamn stink weed in my face.
