But enough of that. It's turning into game 3 part deux.

Oh, and good run, Lindy.

Is he, along with the rest of Buffalo, still biatching about Hull's foot in the crease?

you have to respect what he did with those terrible buffalo teams in the past. essentially taking what would be bottom 3 and 4th line players on any other team and turning them into star talent and a completely over achieving team with chemistry. Sadly those players all sought to cash in instead of building a potential detroit style dynasty where the stars stay and build up that powerhouse.

Having said all of that, clearly he lost the room this year. its bound to happen eventually to every coach. some much much faster than others based on coaching styles.

The smartest GM in the league will likely be the one to hire him next.

Only because the rules specifically said that type of goal was not a goal and the rules were changed literally in the middle of overtime of the finals.  But I'm sure that if your team got screwed in a championship game by the officials you wouldn't be upset at all.

Lindy Ruff is probably my favorite active coach.  I still remember him as a player with the San Diego Gulls back in the day...always a classy guy.  It was cool to watch him do so well at the NHL level as a coach.

Side note:  Flyers coach  Peter Laviolette also played for the San Diego Gulls around the same time...

/don't even get me started on the NFL coaching family tree that is San Diego State University,,,

Nothing but well wishes for Lindy.  unless he gets hired by another EC team.

I probably would have acknowledged the fact that it was Game 6 and my team was two games down.

I've heard good things about the new guy. Lindy was the only Sabres coach I've ever known, so this'll be interesting. Hope the players respond.

2013-02-20 11:45:23 PM
I haven't watched hockey actively since 99 (Stars fan, watched em get robbed live) and when I turned on NBC this weekend and the Sabers were playing I was blown away he was STILL coaching. Could not believe it. So of course a week later he gets fired.

2013-02-21 01:11:23 AM
The 4 head coaches who've been with their team the longest as of December 2012:

1- Gregg Popovich (Spurs)
2- Lindy Ruff (Sabres)- fired
3- Andy Reid (Eagles)- fired
4- Mike Scioscia (LA Angels)

Two of those guys fired in the last 2 months and Scioscia is probably on the hot seat with as much talent as they have (yet missing the playoffs last year). Funny how this business works sometimes.

I thought of Ruff in a very similar way I thought of Tubby Smith at Kentucky.  Good coach, great guy.  Had a long, relatively successful tenure with the team, but in the end, it was time to go separate ways.

2013-02-21 03:47:50 AM
Ruff needs to take a break for a few months and get a proper outside perspective on the league again, and then he'll be back, he's too good to be gone for long.

2013-02-21 07:01:06 AM
I like Lindy Ruff, but it was time. He'd clearly lost the team, and appeared at a total loss for answers. It's not just this year - the last three seasons have all been disappointments.

He gets a lot of credit for taking those late 90s low-talent teams so far, but really most of that credit should go to Hasek. Where Ruff really deserves the most credit is remaking the team during the 2004-05 lockout. The team had been terrible before, but Ruff spent the entire lockout down in Rochester working with the young players and installing a new system that correctly anticipated the way the game was evolving. The team came out of the Lockout like gangbusters the next two seasons, and he deserved that Jack Adams he won.

I think going with an interim coach for the rest of the season is the right move, then see who is available in the summer. Eakins? Cooper? Roy? Many possibilities.

The only question is, now that its clearly a tank year, is the motto "Stop Winnin for MacKinnon" or "Regress for Seth"?

2013-02-21 07:36:10 AM
BTW, Ruff's 571 wins with one team is second-most in NHL history, after Al Arbour with the Islanders.

Oh good. Now I don't ever have to hear a "Since Lindy Ruff was hired by the Sabres back in the Pleistocene epoch, 4,562,234.5 coaches have been hired and fired." stat ever again.

Blame your own broadcasters for that.

I watch a lot of different broadcasts on Center Ice. NESN is the only one that invariably brought that stat up every single game against the Sabres.

Of course, I usually mute the NESN broadcasts, because Jack Edwards annoys the fark out of me.

I've gotten to the point where I can just tune Edwards out. He's in that selective hearing group along with my mother-in-law, sister, and Tim McCarver.

Between Hodgson, Ennis, Grigs and Girgs I think the middle is set.  Also the idea of a twin towers (Jones and Myers) D just sounds impressive.   Regress for Seth.

It's not so much that he's a homer.  Most broadcasters are somewhat biased in favor of the team that employs them.

It's that he's a unprofessional jackass.  He's a clown.  There's a reason why no one outside of New England takes Edwards seriously or respects him as a broadcaster.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJXs5AaWIbY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-r79O8uVgU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbFkAnrEvLg&list=PLB5E7AD49EE542F4C

It's one thing to put on a favorable spin for the home team.  But Edwards oftentimes seems divorced from reality.  Like he's calling a game that exists in his mind and has little to do with what is actually happening on the ice.  This is particularly true when it comes to fights, hits, and penalty calls.

There's a lot of homer announcers in the league, but Jack's enthusiasm for the team just comes across as a bit too much.   To make it worse, he isn't a particularly great play-by-play guy.

Brick, on the other hand, is one of the better commentators in the league IMO.  If the Bruins are playing dumb, he more or less will say so.

Brick + Jeanneret would be the best pairing ever.

/yes, I am 100% serious

I met Lindy Ruff once and it wasn't even when I lived in Buffalo.  I was in Boston visiting friends and went to some mall near the arena before heading to a sabres/bruins game.  I had a Miroslav Satan sabres sweater on.  I ran into him and Mike Ramsey (asst coach) in the Williams-Sonoma store.  No one other then me knew who the hell he was.  We talked for a few minutes and told me to keep my jacket on so no Bostonians would attack me in the mall.   Yeah I know it's a dumb story, so what?

2013-02-21 01:35:33 PM
Good riddance.  Hope he lands in the Western Conference so they can deal with his epic whining sprees on those rare occasions he actually makes the playoffs.

To varying degree they happen all the time in the NHL, skill guys will get a pass on what would be a penalty for a grinder probably at close to once a game.
