It's incredibly easy to sterilize meat with gamma rays which is how many things from spices  to drugs to medical supplies are sterilized.  The whackos stop this from being done because it's scary radiation and the deaths from food infections exceed gun murders every year.  And just so the vegans don't feel smug the food borne infections from fruits and vegetables exceed the food borne infections from meat every year too.  Better fry up that salad if you want it to be actually healthy.

Nabb1: It is, but it's a lot cheaper here than in Europe.  And you can get higher quality meat on a par with Europe as long as you find a butcher you trust.

You know why it's cheaper, right? I'll give you a hint, it starts with a G and ends with an OVERNMENT HANDOUT

WOW

15% of Americans get food illness EVERY YEAR!

Lets see, no one in my family has ever had a serious food illness. The only instance of food poisoning that we can relate is an under cooked piece of restaurant chicken ten years ago that produces a single episode of vomiting.

Its worse than that though, my uncle is a primary care physician and he mentioned coincidentally last thanksgiving that food poisoning, salmonella and e coli are reasonably rare events in our area.  He was in no way poking fun at my wife's turkey dinner.

But if 15% of all Americans are getting sick EVERY YEAR, then there have to be people who are literally getting sick every month from food contaminents.....thats the only way that statistic can be accurate.

So Im just going to say BS and cook your meat thouroughly. And dont eat tripe, that shiat is disgusting, they eat that crap  all over in Europe.

Journalistic crap.  They are equating the estimated number of hospital visits in Europe to the number of estimated upset-stomach  non-hospital events in the US.  The CDC and the European CDC likely has different standards for reporting food born illnesses.

OBVIOUS tag on a diet?  This is one of those cases where capitalism more or less works as designed.  The problem isn't that the government doesn't punish and even supports & rewards the most odious companies in charge of our food supply.  Well it is, but it happens because no one really cares -- it's a symptom of society, not the disease.  The problem is that even when businesses do get caught, consumers don't punish them either.

The "pink slime" scandal was illuminating.  The stuff is actually quite benign; as far as fast food ingredients that post health risks it probably wouldn't crack the top 20, but some companies stopped buying it because of public outrage.  The question that was never asked was, how do food companies operate that would make them receptive to using pink slime in the first place?  But no, as soon as their favorite household names stopped using the stuff, people went right back to buying food without asking the most basic questions about what they're eating.

Because that style of serving (originally) minced beef originated in Hamburg, Germany.

You lazy gringo bastard, if you were only willing to work for a bowl of rice and beans every day and sleep eight to a bedroom we wouldn't have to import people from Mexico whose culture and values are more vibrant than yours (and who rightfully own your house and land anyway, if you live in the Southwest).

P.S. Remember to vote for the Democratic Party -- it's the working man's friend!

Yes, the budget of the USDA has been cut so severely that they can barely scrape together the $200,000 needed for an anti- American "diversity training" seminar in which employees are required to chant "the pilgrims were illegal aliens" (wot, not undocumented?)

And by the way... who's been President for the past five years? Nah, whatever tainted meat is out there must all be Bush's fault.

I hope you get e-coli.

Yes, but how do you harvest it, without being a menace to society.  You are so violent!  I fear for the safety of your family, friends and neighbors.

I call them over to me and whisper that I'm hungry.  They lay down and stop their own heart from beating.  It's very peaceful.

I once ate at this restaurant where the cow came out to the table and pointed out which bits were the tastiest. Then it nipped off to the kitchen and shot itself. It told us not to worry; it would be very humane. Now THAT was a fresh steak.

FWIW, I haven't had food poisoning since I went full academy* (haven't been sick at all, come to think of it.) Where you do get problems is with commercial pre-sliced onion and tomato IIRC.  Those are brutal for contamination but a lot of the time that's from knife re-use.  Sprouts, too.  I don't eat sprouts because you just can't clean them.  And if you aren't washing your food before you prep it, you're asking for trouble, and that's just as true for lettuce and pork chops.

*The reason I stopped eating meat was due to the reduction in slaughterhouse regulation in 2000 and the noticable degradation in quality.

Don't forget using the same cutting boards and knives for meats and vegetables without washing either.

Americans are so used to eating food out of a box that by god when you actually have to chop something or cut fat from meat, etc, they clam up (no pun intended) and  fark themselves with bad cooking practices.

For gods sakes, America is the country who gave the world Sandra Lee!!! That alone should be punishable by nuclear hellfire.

Most people dying from food infections are slobs, old senile people, & people who like to eat fancy pants food like raw seafood.

Some people die from bacteria on food boohoo. Humans are in no danger of going extinct. The ones with superior immune systems are supposed to survive.

Article is pure B.S.  Author seems to think that Europe is better than the States in all things.  Now it is horse meat, a decade ago it was mad cow disease causing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.  That was again a European problem.  Its why you can't donate blood if you spent more than 6 months in  Europe during the 80s and 90s.

There is, however, plenty of evidence that many Americans are inadvertently eating a side of deadly bacteria like salmonella or e. coli with their burgers.

Cook your burger thoroughly and wash your goddamn hands and you should be OK.

I think the problem is that horses aren't meant to be eaten in most cases and so they're often pumped full of drugs that aren't allowed in cattle.
