They lost a very minor offensive player and a few overpriced defenders.  Thats not rebuilding mode when you have Breesus, a receiving corps, and a platoon of RBs

Unless they trade or cut Brees, they aren't rebuilding

This. Dumping a backup tight end and a backup corner doesn't throw a team into rebuildng mode

That one kind of surprised me.  That's a proper rebuilding mode move, or at least until they resign Sanchez or something stupid.

They've had some pretty good seasons in between. I don't think you call a team that won 11, 10, 10, 11, 9 , 13, 9, 13 games from 1990-1997 rebuilding.

Kinda my point.  Chiefs may be only 1-1 in Super Bowls but don't lump them in with eternal chumps like the Jags and Browns... yet  :(

The ring has that same thousand yard stare most long-term Chiefs fans have from season after season of ugly children grueling defeat.

They had a jacked up salary situation for years - they overpaid older guys who then started to succumb to injuries and declining play. Scott was one. He's been hurt, and hasn't played as well as hoped the last few seasons.

Add that to the idiotic 'confidence extension' they gave Sanchez and you're looking at cutting veterans differently. It's only really 'rebuilding' in the sense that they don't have a ton of talent in their younger players to make up for it. If a few more picks panned out or didnt get hurt and Sanchez weren't terrible the team would look a lot different.

Note: Joe Flacco is yet hitting free agency. Mark Sanchez was drafted a year later. The Jets gave a QB on a rookie contract an extension why again? They could cut him NOW if they hasn't and had almost no repercussions on the cap. Idiotic move.

They were $20m over, Scott didn't have a lot left, and was due a ton of money. It's how it works.

Yeah that was the basis of my joke.  And adding further to it is that they made no Wide Receiver or RB moves to help Sanchez.  Someone literally said "no, this Sanchez guy is good enough."

and they did it with a straight face.

The Saints defense was getting old and expensive. They can't rebuild it in a year, especially after the harm done to them by Goodell. They have the offense for sure, but it would be nice not to have to score 35 points to get a win.

Well, Brees taking up 1/6 of the cap room probably has something to do with it. I think 10% should have been about the max any team paid for any individual player. Brees (and soon Flacco) will be eating up 16-17% of the teams' caps.

Actually, doing ALL salaries by %s would be nice from a fan perspective. Easier to understand at least.

steamingpile: Yeah I remember saying this is breesus contract talk threads and some were saying that's crazy because Brees would never do that to NO.

Well, it's stupid to think that a player wouldn't want to get the best contract he could at the peak of his value.  The MKE sports talk guys have that topic every few days with Greg Jennings' contract expiring, "Should GJ take less money to stay with the Packers and compete for a Super Bowl or go to a lesser team for more money?"  I don't understand why anyone in the peak of their career wouldn't take the money and why anyone would think less of them for it.

Now I could understand fans being upset if someone like Randy Moss was biatching about money as he is clearly on the downside of his career, but Brees at the top of his game should be hitting the jackpot button.

Yes, you were the lone voice in the wilderness telling everyone how Brees would actually want to get paid like he should, lol...of all the distinct flavors of steamingpile, I do think revisionist "I'm a genius for saying what everyone else actually also said!" is my favorite.

Some people REALLY like winning. And winning and a legacy becomes more important to them than making $20m vs $16m a year. It's not right or wrong - but it is rare.

Brady is kinda sorta maybe an example of a guy that didn't hold out for top dollar. If you believe the sports media.

He signed that deal right when he was coming off his 3rd super bowl, and it was only for about $10 million per year, way under market value. The Pats were able to use that money to sign other free agents (like Adalius Thomas), that just didn't work out for them in terms of cost/benefit. The contract that Brady signed 2-3 years ago made him the highest paid player in NFL history.

8 playoff wins since the merger isn't getting you much above the fray.  To put that in context, Andy Reid had 10.
