timujin: Gosling: Tustin's a tad southeast of Anaheim and we figure Anaheim as part of Los Angeles.

"We" do?  I don't, as a matter of fact, I am often amused when people from elsewhere hear I'm from L.A. and they say, "Oh, I've been there, my family went to Disneyland."  Anaheim is an entire world away from L.A.

Mitch Taylor's Bro: ShawnDoc: SInce we're discussing California geography and naming, can I be the one to point out San Francisco and San Jose aren't in Northern California, they're in Central California.

/Grew up in Northern California
//Hates the way everyone ignores everything north of Berkley.

Really?

He's right, ShawnDoc, San Francisco is the most southerly point in northern California, geographically speaking.  Personally, though, I'd extend "central California" down to everything north of Santa Barbara.

reillan: and Subby didn't say "in Los Angeles"... he said "in the Los Angeles area"...

and I'm only saying that is a generous usage of area, as that opens up a lot of territory in four different counties to be "in the Los Angeles area".

/quite surprised, though, that the entire thread has become a discussion on geography... maybe folks are tired of talking about gun control and mental instability and the like.

Well it honestly is just the same discussion over and over. Plus this geography thing is super serious business.i hate it when people think im from san fransisco.

NorCal doesn't start *at* the mountains. If it did, it would start in LA proper. LA does have mountain ranges in the city limits, you know.

You have to understand -- for most of us, everything south of Santa Barbara, north of San Diego, and west of San Bernadino is "L.A."

Kinda like how the media sometimes refers to any shooting within like a quarter mile of a school as a school shooting.  Or how they refer to any assault rifle as an "AK-47". Lots more examples.  Just a way to get the attention of viewers, I guess. "Los Angeles" sparks more attention than "Tustin".

avratt: Tustin isn't Los Angeles.  I know it all looks the same from over there, but Tustin is about six cities south of L.A., an hour away depending on traffic.  It's about as close as Rancho Cucamonga.  They're in different counties ferfuxake.

If it's south california, it's L.A.

This is a quasi argument I often have with the person I live with. He's always teasing me by saying that everything is SoCal is LA. I, having grown up in Laguna Niguel, have stricter boundaries. I pretty much consider everything North of Anaheim to be LA and everything south of San Onofree to be SD; really starting at Oceanside with that big section of Pendalton being no man's land. Anyways, I'm sad to report that the belief that everything South of Malibu that isn't San Diego is considered LA and it irks me =/

I actually live in the Central Coast of CA, and at least for us the central coast is Santa Barbara County through Monterey county.  SJ and SF are northern CA, because in truth there is really no population centers north of the bay area.  Just a lot of water and weed up there.

"Central California" is considered the Fresno and Bakersfield areas.

Not all of us. I've often cried for those who grow pot to go free but never for those who grow cilantro to be road hauled all the way jail with their own tractors.

They have a right to grow the Devil's Butt Soap just like hippies should be allowed to grow pot and my herb garden should be able to have certain things in it as well.

I'm happy as a clam at high tide thjat I live in OC and not LA. Even (or especially) when we were homeless it is a MUCH better environment. Lower taxes, saner city governments (with some exceptions) lots of ethnic diversity and food (Soul, German, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Korean, Mexican, El Salvadorean, Guatemalan, Laotian, French, American South, etc.), and the smog is less and the weather more temperate. Also less crazy people.

But they're only free to do things you deem good, or harmless?

The problem with everyone being free is that also means people are free to punch you in the face and take your stuff, or anything else they might want to do. I'm sure they rationalize it to themselves as justified, even if you may not agree. It invariably turns into a subjective ethical or moral debate, and you have to decide what people can and can't do in order to maintain some semblance of order, and we're right back where we started.

Seriously, your description of Ladera Ranch is spot on, except the USC blowhards took over Balboa Island long ago. Ladera is more for the lower upper class who can afford a million dollar home, but can't afford the ten million dollar home behind the fences in Coto De Caza and Dove Canyon.

Oh I totally know that (although an argument could me made for Santa Ana) but it seems that everyone who has not  lived in LA or Orange County, views So Cal as LA and San Diego. some folks make the mistake intentionally to get on other's nerves; but the vast majority are just ignorant to the existence of Orange County and it's boundaries. Given the growth of San Diego northward and San Clemente southward, meeting at Camp Pendleton, it might be in our lifetime that we get a continuous city from Santa Barbara to Tijuana.  Heck, looking at Google Maps, it looks like Camp Pendleton is the only thing in the way of that already being the case...
