Tustin isn't Los Angeles.  I know it all looks the same from over there, but Tustin is about six cities south of L.A., an hour away depending on traffic.  It's about as close as Rancho Cucamonga.  They're in different counties ferfuxake.

Tustin's a tad southeast of Anaheim and we figure Anaheim as part of Los Angeles.

It really cracks me up how the press reports on suburbs (or in this case, non-suburbs) of major metropolises. When San Diego had two school shootings in two weeks, the national news talked about the schools being NEAR San Diego. They're like a 15 minute drive down the freeway from downtown San Diego. But Tustin is in the heart of LA. *chuckles*

I used to live in Rancho Cucamonga, so I'm getting a kick...

Yeah, *technically* that's true, but let's face it - it's one massive, sprawling, seemingly-endless city.  When you're landing at LAX, even without circling, you're 45 minutes out when you first start coming into a city area, and it never ceases to be city the entire way...

and Subby didn't say "in Los Angeles"... he said "in the Los Angeles area"...

I can remember my grandfather driving me from our house in L.A. to his house in Crestline, near Lake Arrowhead.  And I remember passing the wide, empty spaces...the little towns separated by chaparral, the foothills, the vineyards of Rancho Cucamonga, and the flat, shiatty spans of Fontana and Rialto, and him saying to me, "Someday, L.A. will connect with San Bernardino and it will be just one continuous suburb the whole way."  And I was like "Sure it will, old timer.  Take another plug off that Early Times and talk some more crazy."

But wasn't someone complaining the other day that some Hollywood bigwig was holding a fundraiser for LA mayor in Beverly Hills and how horrible it was that it "wasn't in Los Angeles"?? Make up your damn minds!

I just read the transcript of a Freakonomics podcast yesterday, and the analytical Steve remarked that given the rate of gun ownership, the relative ease in obtaining one in this country, and how many crazy people are out there, he's constantly surprised by how INfrequent mass shootings are.  I guess today was a non-surprising day if you just look at the data.

Not to say (and neither does he) that the data doesn't paint a sad picture.  It is pretty bad when the most you can hope for is that his victims didn't suffer for long.

This is the big sticking point right here. For a lot of us, the point where a city stops is the point where the city actually stops. The point at which there are no more buildings and you're driving through farmland or desert or whatever indicates there is no city there. Until you get to that point, you're still in the city.

For instance, punch in 34 degrees, 04'28'' N, 117 degrees, 04'08'' W on Google Earth. You'll be placed on California 38, heading eastbound out of Mentone. That's where LA stops.

Root of the complaint should be that Joe Biden cares more about what gun you use than the fact there are maniacs who want to kill people.

/That said: crime should be a problem for the state to solve rather than the federal government.

Oh yeah, politically and emotionally (mentally?) No Cal starts north of the Bay. I'd say even out of Marin. You need to be in Humboldt before you're in Northern California, at least.

"We" do?  I don't, as a matter of fact, I am often amused when people from elsewhere hear I'm from L.A. and they say, "Oh, I've been there, my family went to Disneyland."  Anaheim is an entire world away from L.A.

He's right, ShawnDoc, San Francisco is the most southerly point in northern California, geographically speaking.  Personally, though, I'd extend "central California" down to everything north of Santa Barbara.

reillan: and Subby didn't say "in Los Angeles"... he said "in the Los Angeles area"...

and I'm only saying that is a generous usage of area, as that opens up a lot of territory in four different counties to be "in the Los Angeles area".

/quite surprised, though, that the entire thread has become a discussion on geography... maybe folks are tired of talking about gun control and mental instability and the like.
