My wife and I have twin 18-month old daughters.  After a year and half the whole situation is just now becoming manageable.

Don't get me wrong - having twins is a special thing, and our kids are very happy, healthy, etc.  But it was also nearly impossible for either of us to go anywhere for the first year.  Imagine two babies who are hungry and want their bottle NOW.  I can't tell you how many times my wife went up to put our 5-year old to bed and came back downstairs to find me stuck on the couch with a baby in each arm holding a bottle to their mouth.

I remember opening the fridge one day while holding a stack of towels trying to figure out where they went because I was so exhausted.

Having 4 at the same time....well...I can't imagine.

Seriously - if you ever know someone who has twins - go out of your way to help them.  It is HARD.  I have helped make life and death decisions for other people (end of life care type stuff) and this is WAY, way harder.  The absolute best thing you can do is let them sleep. Stop by unannounced (preferably with help) and say "Go sleep for a couple hours - we got this" - and just watch their kids.

But, as they get older - built in playmate.  Tonight after dinner my wife played cards with our now 6-year old and I did up the dishes while the toddlers played with each other.  After that I played with them (several rounds of tickling, "airplane", chasing them around, etc...) and it was great fun.

I saw this with an ex-friend and her husband. Hubby drove an OTR rig for a living so he was never home and when he did see the kids, it was for a day or so before he got back on. He didn't see the drudgery of daily life so he just wanted her to keep popping out babies. If she hasn't kicked him to the curb for banging every lot lizard from Miami to Georgia, who knows how many kids they'd have.

Yes, the four of them are quadruplets, but in this case, there are also two sets of twins. Two eggs fertilized, each split.

This. My twins are 4 now and I no memory of the first year. It's just a blur of never sleeping more than 4 hours straight. And the older brother was only 19 months when they were born. I don't know how we did it

Yep - the entire first year is a blur.  I took 3 weeks off from work when they were born and I literally remember none of it.

I do remember one thing about a week after that - my sister in law stopped by and told me to sit down for a minute and she made me a sandwich.  I fell asleep eating it on the couch.  My wife didn't even bother to try and crashed out beside me.

On the plus side I NEVER had trouble going to sleep during that period....
