"...he was "fighting for his life," and testimony from his partner, Donyule Williams, that Sabur bit him and tried to grab his gun..."

Wow. So this guys bites a cop and lunges for a gun and we are just going to let him go free? The jury pool must have been selected from the local welfare rolls, it's obvious the prosecution didn't challenge any of them. Not that he would have been sentenced appropriately had he been properly convicted, probably would have gotten off with parole or a fine. This is ridiculous, when are people going to take responsibility for their actions?

There won't be any justice unless the cops involved and the Prosecutor (who was basically just the police's lapdog in this case) are eventually fired.

This is why I think most cops are bad.

Every other cop there lied to protect a criminal, or covered up a criminal act.

If most cops weren't bad you would see plenty of cases of shiat like this without video evidence. Cop defenders live in some fantasy world where cops only cross the line on camera.

No different.
The police will do an internal investigation, and find that they were justified in their actions.
Suspension with pay and benefits.
Next case.

Looks like more like a problem of not applying enough force.

Police on the scene should have continued to apply force to get the suspect face down on the ground and handcuffed rather than to make half-assed attempts while suspect is sitting up.

Nothing good comes from prolonging the struggle.  Be it for the Police or the suspect.

A paid vacation at least. Cops never get fired unless they badmouth other cops (see: Christopher Dorner).

2013-02-19 06:53:11 PM
In the very beginning of the video you can clearly hear a cop yell "he just bit me."  After that he's clearly resisting arrest.  So we're supposed to act shocked that a guy who bites a cop and subsequently resists arrest gets hit with a baton?  Anyone using the phrase "beating his ass" clearly didn't watch the video and what he got he deserved.

The bad part is when the cop brandishes his gun.  That was clearly too far.  That cop at least needs to be suspended until he goes through retraining, perhaps even fired depending on his record.

fusillade762: A paid vacation at least

I gotta say, out of all the bad things you can say about cops this has got to be the most ridiculous. Of course they are going to be off duty while they are charged, and of course they are going to still get payed when they haven't been convicted of a crime. When they get charged with something they have to be taken off duty, but until they are actually convicted of a crime they aren't fired and are still going to receive a paycheck. I know that's not how it works for you and I, but that's a deficiency in our employment contracts, not something special that they don't deserve.

The last place I would want to be a cop would be Philadelphia (well Baltimore I suppose).  I can somewhat understand with the cop's fear, but he should have never let it get to the point of pulling a gun.  I'm willing to bet that he was distracted with taking down this guy, and got spooked thinking that the crowd was closing in or getting close to 'angry mob', but misjudged their movements.

That said, I find it disgusting that when you have so many police officers you can't just overpower a guy.  Hell, half the officers there could have probably sat on him till he passed out and it wouldn't have looked half as bad.   The officer with the baton was swinging way too wildly to subdue the guy and could easily have injured him or the other officers.  Once the guy was sitting there in the 'I didn't do nothing wrong' phase, that was an opportunity to talk the guy down, or at least give clearer directions to lie down.

Personally, I think that there should be no ability to charge someone for anything once the first baton blow to the head lands.  I don't care what that person has been told or is having yelled at them, I can't believe that anyone could behave rationally while being hit in the head with a club.

Here is how it works for me:

I don't show up to work, for whatever reason, I'm burning vacation.  Once I run out of vacation, it's on my own dime.  Even if I'm later exonerated in the most tremendous miscarriage of justice you could imagine, my employer isn't going to pay me a dime.  I'm pretty sure that's how it works for most people.

Cops are like airplanes.  If you run your commercial-grade electronics when you're near one you can fry the sensitive electronics inside.

That's why they can only have police-approved cameras recording.  Those cameras go through rigorous testing to make sure that they don't emit cop-crazyness EM fields.  Your COTS camera doesn't go through those tests.

lennavan: In the very beginning of the video you can clearly hear a cop yell "he just bit me."  After that he's clearly resisting arrest.

You sure about that? I don't see much resisting, mostly cowering on the ground with his hands around his head. Except for the part where the cops backed off and let the guy up while Officer Leocal ran around waving his gun in the air and screaming "Don't fark with me". From that point on all I see is several cops trying to hold on to the suspect while simultaneously trying to keep out of the way of Leocal's baton as he beats Sabur.

Anyone using the phrase "beating his ass" clearly didn't watch the video and what he got he deserved.

Giving him what he deserved is the role of the Courts, not the Police. This is America, not England.

Nope.

People are and should be fired all the time for reasons that don't warrant being charged with a crime.  For cops, or for anybody who has power to arrest us that bar should be far, far lower than conviction of a crime.

2013-02-19 07:20:05 PM
This is another example of why all police should be required to have tiny cameras on their person at all times.

I'm so farking sick and tired of the "...suspect attempted to grab my gun..." bullshiat.  Want to know what happens to people who grab a cop's gun?  They get shot.  Period.  Full stop.  The fact that the dude simply got his ass kicked proves the point that he did nothing but get in the way of two psychopaths with badges.

DrRatchet: You sure about that? I don't see much resisting, mostly cowering on the ground with his hands around his head.

I see the officers trying to handcuff him and him refusing to move his arms behind his back.  Start watching at the 36 second mark.  It's incredibly clear he's resisting.

That's exactly what I saw. The other officers couldn't move in and effect an arrest without putting themselves in harm's way. Officer Leocal was assaulting Sabur and no one there had a plan to stop an assault when it's a co-worker doing the assaulting.

Have I forgotten how to do math or does:

11+3-4 / 2 X 5-13
= 11 + 3 - ((4/2) x 5) - 13
= 14 - (2 x 5) - 13
= 14 - 10 - 13
= -9
