StreetlightInTheGhetto: thecpt: I'm fine with being called a frat, but the stigma has to end.

FFS.  You can deal with it.  Trust me.

SO was in a frat.  He went to a tiny private school in the middle of nowhere.  The other guys in his frat were generally pretty awesome, and it the *only* way he could live off campus (besides some lame senior lottery iirc).

However, he doesn't really give a damn if I call it a frat, nor if I blare the horn and flick off the douchebags in our town who belong to the same frat when they spill their Saturday pre-game pre-party into the middle of the five lane street and I have to f--king get to work.  Because they do, indeed, suck in our current town.  And because it wasn't his life and didn't encompass every damn important college experience.

DePauw?

AngryJailhouseFistfark: mbillips: I wonder how many of them get the one black glove upraised as a fist reference?

You mean, in some sense other than Black Power? Because if they're not trying to be X-treme Ironical, I don't know why they'd have that in there.

He is saying I'm the man, I've made all these guys my biatch.

JeffreyScott: ProfessorOhki: JeffreyScott: In my opinion, the only thing people should be asking is why the Office of Greek Life is investigating this? Even if you don't find the humor in this, and even if you hate fraternities, why shouldn't this be protected free speech?

If the organization had to be chartered through the Office of Greek Life, they undoubtedly signed some code of conduct, which their members then agreed to. It's within the office's power to investigate possible breeches of that contract and act within it, up to, I assume, revocation of their charter and any privileges official recognitions associated with it.

You're more than free to willingly enter into contracts that place penalties on certain speech.

The University of Michigan is a state university.  As such the university would be prohibited from interfering with a student's constitutionally protected freedom of speech.  Treating them different than other student's would violate constutional equal protection and freedom of association principals.

Which is why I said revocation of their charter. You know, removing special status enjoyed by them currently and instead treating them the same as other students. If they suspended or expelled them, I would agree with you; if they simply threatened to stop recognizing them as a Greek organization, boo hoo.

You know, I'll bet you there's all sorts of private clubs that are free speech that you still can't get the university to officially recognize. Go figure.

It can become complicated depending on how this 'Office of Greek Life' is chartered.  It could be like the BSA - no official ties with the government, but it gets a lot of benefits anyways.

If the OGL is 'technically' a private organization that handles the various fraternities/sororities, then it could have more reach than the university itself.

Then again, they might end up investigating then have a determination of 'no findings'.  Sometimes you have to investigate merely to satisfy the whiners.

There's that too. My school had a 'corporation' entity of itself located on-campus that handled all the food-service stuff... and I believe housing, but didn't have the same financial transparency requirements as the university proper.

Took you long enough.

JohnAnnArbor: stuhayes2010: How are they going to explain that black guy in their fraternity?

Um, the issue is usually the opposite: black guy in non-black fraternity risks ostracism by other black people on campus.

Wow! Sounds like the same thing democrats do to black republicans

Adrian and Albion are the two that come immediately to mind.  (I said Depauw because they're unusually Greek-heavy: something like 80% of the student body joins up.)

ProfessorOhki: Vandalism IS a stereotypical "frat" activity.

It sure is. What we did was funny, didn't harm the fountains in any way, and was gone by the next day. I don't really consider that vandalism, and the dictionary doesn't either.

Technically "illegal" use of the flag.

I have a strong dislike for frats and Pika was pretty annoying, but why is this a big deal? Because they are far less cute than they think? Because they are douche-y? This is news?

The only thing even remotely notable about this is that you probably shouldn't be rubbing your junk on the stripes or sticking up in the stars.

Anyone see the movie old school?  Kinda obscure.  But what's to stop a bunch of students from making their own social club and telling the greek life people to suck it?  Can't drink, can't send suggestive photos, can't do any racist stuff.  And the rape is right out the window.

AngryJailhouseFistfark: porcupine tree: I bet that picture was taken right before a good ole fashioned game of 'Soggy Biscuit'.

Sponge Cookie?

Yeah, fact of the matter is that closeted or not, these boys will have misogynistic sex with the sorority babes who don't really want to fark the guys because, while they're cute and what not, they're macho, selfish assholes. Then again, these guys will probably be financially secure and very useful in buying that house in [well heeled suburb of your choice] and allowing her use that Communications degree to "experience" being a mother to 2.5 children. Then she can enjoy battles for SUV status and PTA Supremacy with the other Suburban Housewives with Communications degrees. And they'll all enjoy their Xanax and vibrators and have angry, misogynistic sex with their Corporate Husbands.

It's the sacrifice you make, you know, for your kids.

I am pretty sure you don't have a firm grasp of the meaning of 'firm'.

Not Naked frat boys are a problem now?

I lived in Ann Arbor for many years. Naked people were typical. Until 2004 when the pervs helped can the naked mile run.

Then there was the alcohol ... Isn't there a drunk party or a hazing that the Greek system can investigate instead?

Keep telling yourself that chief, but you guys never learned to close the deal. While you where passed out in your own vomit under the ping-pong table in the basement, non Greeks were stuffing their sausage in your Chi Omega girlfriend in your room, on your bed. They do look kind of silly, but this does not even register on my give-a-fark meter. Sounds like some people in MI need to find some more pressing issues to be outraged about.

I don't get why that pic is a problem. They're all legal, right? What exactly is the issue? I just got the alumni newsletter for my school, and there's a nice pic of the swimteam in speedos. How is this different?

Is it the flag? In that case, would you still be complaining if the pic was of hot sorority girls in flag bikinis?

The only possible problem in the pic I can see that would violate any code of conduct is the pic of the keg, if it was taken in the house and kegs are banned. Other than that, unless they specifically agreed not to pose nearly nekkid while wrapped in a flag, Greek Life's got nuthin'.
