I like how they expect that bug bot to sneak up on someone.  You know what that would sound like?  A FARKING GIGANTIC BEE.  It would get swatted out of the sky faster than it's insect counterpart and wouldn't nearly have the maneuverability of it's counterpart too.

The bird one is kinda cool though.

Do they jam a giant needle into your face, pump you full of acid and then explode?

/If they are just going to explode, why the acid? That's someone being a dick.

Love the Obama tie in at the end, but I've seen documentaries about these programs and micro-drones for dozens of years now, DARPA isn't really as subject to shifting poltical winds as other parts of the DoD.

Pure marketing BS designed for idiots at the DoD who just want to throw money at pipe dreams.  What really irks me is the way the narrator says things like "MAVs willdo so and so" when they can't reliably demonstrate anything at all hardly.

Multimillion dollar weapon systems taking out tents in Afghanistan. Now the tables are turned as the Afghanistan people take the offensive with 49 cent fly swatters vs multimillion dollar insects.

What happens when a country with REAL manufacturing capabilities starts making these?  Perhaps, they might get angry with us and turn them loose on us.

Time to develop the counter move. The Personal Airspace Wave-Shock. I call it PAWS. A Personal EMP device that will knock out any drones in a 60ft radius. About the size of a standard stun gun, with the capability of 3 or 4 Discharges per Battery Charge. A little adaptation of the plans found here: http://www.wikihow.com/Build-an-EMP-Generator">http://www.wikihow.com /Build-an-EMP-Generator

Should be good enough to knock out anything pesky without having to even see it.

When I watch that simulation I am horrified. I also think to myself, this technology is more likely to diminish American security than to enhance it. In a world without micro-drones, our military remains overwhelmingly powerful. But what about a world where micro-drones are pervasive? Who knows? Sure, we have a technological advantage right now, but micro-drones sure seem like a disruptive technology that will eventually help rather than hinder attempts at asymmetric warfare.
Yet the U.S. government is making no effort to enlist other powerful nations with the most to lose and establish international norms against the use of drones (in the way we've stigmatized biological weapons) -- rather, we're continuing to fuel a drone arms race that guarantees widespread proliferation. Perhaps such an effort would fail, but to never even try seems shortsighted.

Yawn. There's no significant barrier to entry on this technology and it's essentially no different from what civilian hobbyists are playing with. Any efforts to reign in this "arms race" would be futile.

No way that is going to have a rise-time that's anywhere near fast enough or enough field strength to be useful for affecting something that's not directly inside the coil.

Here's what you'd need:

If this had been an article about miniature surveillance drones that watch people masturbate or crawl up your mom's hoo-ha, then there would be 500 comments on this head.  Fortunately these drones just fly into your home like an errant bee and shoot you in the head.

Anyone doubt that they've made versions that can inject poisons like a mosquito?

Then they harden the electronics in the drones so your PAWS is ineffective.  Your move.

jigger: Why flapping? Propellers are much more efficient, no?

Sound (spinning propellers whine) and wind issues.  I have a Parrot AV drone, and flying it in any sort of wind is a non-starter.

Although it's funny that the defense against the impending evil drone swarm may just be climate change.

What, they add a thick metal shield, or use vacuum tubes? I don't think either of those is practical for a minidrone.

What's their control range? How far can they fly until their power runs out? How good is the camera? *Reads article*

Oh...
