(Rolling Stone)   Morrissey told the Staples Center he'll perform there, but only if they go meat-free during his show, so naturally they obliged. No word when he'll cancel the show   (rollingstone.com) divider line 97

Who the hell does he think he is?!? Paul McCarthey?!

What a pretentious douchebag.

You don't see him crying over the poor marsupial that gave its life to make that pompadour wig for him.

but bacon is an american staple. how can you ban that at the Staples Center!?

The Stealth Hippopotamus: Who the hell does he think he is?!? Paul McCarthey?!

If you mean McCartney, he only demands that his band be vegetarian and that "no meat, or meat by-products" be "allowed to be served in the dressing rooms, production offices, or areas within the 'backstage area.'"

Yeah, he also has reportedly said he won't travel in limos with leather seats, or settle for any furniture that uses animal skins or prints, but he isn't demanding the crowd do the same.

And he isn't an untalented depressing crooner. Or at least he isn't always.

AdolfOliverPanties: If you mean McCartney,

yes yes I did.

I think it's a little weird that he would even use fake animal print but when you that in demand you can have whatever you want. I dont fault the guy for getting what he wants but I do think it's strange. And it's nice that Sir Paul understand the difference between who he is paying to be there and who is paying to be there.

AdolfOliverPanties: And he isn't an untalented depressing crooner. Or at least he isn't always.

I like his stuff. Not the biggest Beatles fan but his solo stuff is good. I didn't go out and buy any of his stuff but it's on a few movie soundtrack on my Iphone.

i don't particularly care for non-smiths morrissey, but even if i thoroughly enjoyed his music, i couldn't go see any performer who insists the venue goes all-veg

does paul demand his band members be full-time vegatarians? or does he just demand he doesn't see them eat meat? i have a hard time believing that his drummer, abe, is a full-time vegatarian. seems it would take half an animal carcass just to get that big dude thru a day

I'm sorry, why should I care if a venue decides not to serve meat during a concert? I didn't even know they served food at all during concerts.

People are weird.

Didn't someone toss a steak on stage a year or two and cause him to walk out on the show?  Anyway, I don't see the problem here, it's only for one show.  The audience probably won't even notice.

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Morrissey  wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Morrissey  went on stage and did a great show.

you should not care, apparently. however, concessions are a huge money maker at concerts, and not just the beer. so, a lot of people do care

Yep.  Wasn't me though.  And you assume that there will actually be an audience.  The guy can't even get anyone to record him, FFS.  He might be able to fill a Staples store with people willing to listen to him, but not the Staples Center.  Not any more.

Seriously, who goes to concerts and has a full meal? Eat before you go to the show, fatty.  It'll be both cheaper and tastier.

It's not like he's banning beer.  He's not banning beer, is he?  That's probably next.

I hate pushy vegans. You don't want to eat meat/wear animal products, fine.  That's a personal choice and I respect it.  Don't get in my face though, and act holier-than-thou because you're eating edamame and tofu and I'm tucking into a bacon cheeseburger.  You live your life and I'll live mine, and as long as what I do doesn't negatively impact your life, shut the fark up.

These people are as bad as the door-to-door religion salespeople that never seem to take the hint after the 20th time you've told them no, you're not interested in finding Jesus.

Joe Rogan said he ran into some of Morissey's crew one time, and they told him they sometimes have burger runs a tthe hotel, but have to post a lookout so Moz doens't know they're crushing cow.

People paying for a Morrissey ticket have bigger problems than not being able to eat a burger while he's inflicting his brand of music on them

Why is it that when washed up celebrities attempt to remain relevant, they always seem to gravitate to "animal rights"?
Didn't work out too well for Pamela Anderson or the Go-Go's... why do they keep doing it?

Wait, there are non-pushy vegans?  I thought the whole point of veganism is to remind everyone around you that you are a vegan.

I'll admit, there's a few songs from Morrisey/The Smiths that I like (What difference does it make?), but, other than that, I don't care much about Morrisey.

"I don't look upon it as a victory for me, but a victory for the animals," Morrissey said in a statement.

Whose food you happen to be eating.  Good job.

2013-02-19 12:25:40 PM
Is he a douche in person too, or is that just his image? Because if it's just an image the people who are in charge of crafting his image are doing a great job.

2013-02-19 12:26:36 PM
The biggest issue I have with Morrissey is that the music he constantly plays says nothing to me about my life.

2013-02-19 12:30:08 PM
Of all of the so-called (by critics and other music know-it-alls) "essential" groups in the rock pantheon, The Smiths are the band I find myself least capable of digging. What is eluding me about them, exactly?  What about them should I be appreciating but just...cannot? Not saying (because I'd never say) you existing aficionados of them shouldn't be. I'm merely just attempting to understand my own failure to "get" them myself. And I've tried. Ohhhh, have I tried.

And, yeah, militant vegans are as obnoxiously repellent to me as pretty much all militant anything-elses.

I know several non-pushy vegans.  Just like I'm an atheist, but I don't make a point of shoving it in the face of every religious person I know.  You wouldn't know my friends are vegans unless you specifically asked them.  When we all go out to eat, we always pick restaurants that at least have a vegetarian option, since vegan options can be hard to find.  That way there's no, "ZOMG YOU'RE EATING A STEAK?!" moments.

That's where you are wrong. Dude packs out your latino demographic - yes, I agree it's an odd phenomenon, but that doesn't mean it's not true. Morrissey could not only sell out the staples, I bet he could do two nights. he could arguably sell more tickets in LA than anywhere else in the world but it ain't like he's playing dive bars on the rest of the tour. I think he's playing the moore theater in seattle. It ain't a football stadium but it damn sure ain't a bar.

I just looked at the tickets. Nothing left on the floor, lower, or premier. You can still get a ticket but it's upper tier only. Then again the show is still a couple weeks away. The only tickets left are nosebleed for $40. all the $100 plus tix are sold out.

You hit the nail on the head there. Huge Latino base, so I could see it happening.

I saw him when he filled the Forum back in '92. Granted, that was during "Maladjusted" and he was hitting his solo peak. But I've see him at a few venues over the years and he does well for himself.

He has a huge Hispanic fanbase. I remember reading Chuck Klostermann's piece on the annual Morrissey convention in LA; I tried to find that to link, but this one from The Believer is just as interesting.
