Right wingers: see the MSM is against us. Reality: the mistake was by Fox, or by AP for believing Fox is accurate.

2013-02-19 10:21:46 AM
The Associated Press has withdrawn its story about Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., saying he sees some in the his party favoring a 2016 presidential candidate with an immigration policy that would "round up people  . . . and send them back to Mexico."

AP missed a "don't" there?

K, here's the thing.

It *is* true that *some* people in the GOP don't favor a "round up 11 million people and march them at gunpoint back into Mexico" candidate in 2016.

But it is also true (as a casual scan of the comments found in many RW blogs on the subject will prove) that some Republicans very much do.

The transcript probably said what Fox News wanted Rand Paul to say. It's apparently what Fox News listeners wanted to hear.

Sooo...the headline SHOULD read:

AP Last week: RUSH TRANSCRIPT SHOWS RAND PAUL WANTS TO ROUND UP MEXICANS AND SEND THEM BACK TO MEXICO. AP This week: Upon further review, Rush is a lying sack and editing things to be more racist, so we have to retract the story.

And the real fallout will be Rush never, ever gets trusted by AP again?

I'm not sure why they're even involved in this.  They gave up on the Ayn Rand worship way back in the '70s.

It wasn't a Rush transcript, it was a rushed transcript.  A hurried transcript.  A hasty transcript.  A slapdash transcript.

Citrate1007: AP does it once........ZOMG conspiracy

But AP didn't even do it once. They quoted Fox's transcript. Their mistake was believing Fox. I have to wonder, when your "news" outlet is dedicated to presenting one-sided propaganda, do you simply forget to vet the actual stories for typos and mistakes? It seems like the editors at Fox have just thrown up their hands and said "Oh, who cares whether we labeled Egypt correctly on the map! It's all bullshiat anyway."

That's not fair your dogs were raised by someone smarter than RON PAUL.

At least the AP is not putting words in Rand Paul's mouth (they're taking them out).

2013-02-19 01:53:10 PM
So subby apparently thinks that AP is a physical newspaper with physical pages and page numbers, as opposed to being a general database of news articles that are released on a feed.

This sucks that I have to admit RANDPAUL ain't the asshole of a situation.

The AP has pages now? And they're even numbered and ordered?

I always thought the AP was a network of news agencies with members like "Fox News."

2013-02-19 02:31:10 PM
Although this story really shows how pervasive and stupid Republicans' persecution complex is.

1) Fox News rushes transcript out on the wire.
2) AP provides transcript to other AP news outlets (Fox News subscribes to the AP, this is how the AP works)
3) AP reviews transcript and corrects it.
4) Republicans notice AP's correction.

Republicans: "ZOMG! The lamestream MSM liberal media is so biased. This is why we watch Fox News!"

I'm so used to GOP backpedaling that I'm more surprised it's the AP correcting itself instead of RAND PAUL "clarifying" his statement.  Mitt Romney Syndrome or something

But none with a shinier coat.

2013-02-19 03:42:51 PM
Who cares?

1. Lots of conservatives/republicans (and many a democratic voter) are absolutely on board with rounding people up and shipping them out.

2. Rand Paul should not be presented as representative of Republican views, nor should the fact that he said something hold extra weight.

3. When "libertarians" who are members of the republican party say something I, as a somewhat liberal, agree with, it is generally an issue where they are more or less just paying lip service to a select group of independents and are set up in a constituency where the more conservative/republican voters will be stuck with them anyways.  So it isn't that these libertarians want us to play nicer overseas or embrace hippie ideals of smoking weed and living a kind caring life towards everyone around them.  It is just a cover and an attack on political opposition.

Beyond that, whether its a bush, kennedy, clinton, or paul, I thoroughly dislike political families within our system.  They reek of using connections and ties in place of what should actually drive a politician in a perfect world: responsibility, passion, and a duty to serve and better the nation.  Is that asking a lot of politicians? Sure I guess so, but George Washington pretty much turned down a kingship, so I don't think asking a congressman to cast his vote in a way that puts the nation first to be too much.

I think you'll find near-universal agreement that George Washington was a far more principled man than any of us.

The problem with "asking a congressman to cast his vote in a way that puts the nation first" is that there are no methods of independent verification or avenues for reprisal outside of the electoral process. A Congressman's duty is not to put nation first, it's to put constituency first, and if their constituents don't want to put the nation first...
