Martin O'Neill is a Celtic legend. The greatest manager we've had since Jock Stein and he is Neil Lennon's mentor. I'll take his word on what football managers need and don't over any videogame designer any day.

And yet, the videogame designer is laughing all the way to the bank and back.  In the end, I chalk it up as a win for him.  It's like biatching that sim city isn't proper urban planning, and that rock band is inferior to a real band.

We know, but that shot isn't fun in real life.  No one likes looking at endless spreadsheets, manifests, etc, save for perhaps Eve players.

As someone whos played the game, thats pretty much what it is anyways.

Dont like soccer but figured itd be fun.I was wrong, you have to be a soccer fanatic to get enjoyment out of it.

//Thats not a knock against the game, its great for what its supposed to be.

I think this is true. It's a great game for what it is, but I get the best use out of it when I just want to learn more about certain players who are being rumored to head to my team or rival clubs. I mean, you just can't argue with the depth of research they do so it's worthwhile for that. Anyway...

This. And I play Simcity.

I really liked it for awhile, but have kinda fallen out from it.  I think mainly I used it as a learning tool, learnig about all the different leagues, competitions, structures, stadia, etc. in football....but lately I just don't have time for the _game_ aspect of it, and to be honest, while the internals might be gettng revamped with each revision, the interface and gameplay has remained pretty static since FM2005.

Different game but:  When one can pull off paying £35 Million & Theo Walcott for Edinson Cavani, then no...you are not an expert on making signings in football.

Obviously.  And the early critics of Sabermetrics were 100% correct, too.  No baseball team ever won anything by relying on actual statistics instead of the gut feelings of managers/scouts/etc.  Nope.

I'm sure that this guy's system can be misused (much like Sabermetrics often is), but that doesn't mean it's worthless.  Nor does an appeal to authority, in the form of Mr O'Neill (or those other two people of whom I have never heard either), mean that he must always be correct about anything in particular.

Disagree.  I bought the 2011 edition off Steam when they were having a sale after hearing how great it was.  I hadn't watched soccer ever, and I hadn't played since elementary school.  FM11 is in my top 3 favourite games.  I actually took up watching a bit of soccer.  Basically everything I know about soccer I picked up from playing FM11, and I found it to be huge fun.

/ Turned Toronto FC into the dominant MLS team
// compete rather nicely with the Euro clubs in various competitions

If you think that's bad, you should try getting through a full season in the game. Maybe there's a way to turn down the detail level that I haven't noticed, but it's kind of a chore right out of the box.

Why does BAFTA give awards for video games? They're the Academy of Film and Television. Their standing on the subject is about as valid as the Spike VGAs.

Nonexistent I'm afraid. The closest to Formula 1 would be Car Tycoon. Note I said closest, which could mean not close at all.

I think there's one on Steam called Pole Position. I tried it once and just wasn't thrilled with it.
