and this nonsense can be thwarted by pointing to the organ donor status on ones driver's license.

Checkmate, Alabama.

"When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body," McClurkin told the Montgomery Advertiser on Thursday."

But somehow every other organ removal is private between me and my doctor. Spleen giving me issues, out it goes, without a FARK given by any senator. Heck if I wanted my moobs cut off for vanity, nobody would care.

2013-02-18 08:44:17 PM
FTA: McClurkin's argument actually undermines the "personhood" bills being pushed around the country by other like-minded Republican lawmakers.

Apparently, the GOP aren't geeky enough to be familiar with the Ferengi's 60th Rule Of Acquisition.

If she has dated only Republican men, then it's entirely likely she's never had a large organ in her body...

My body's largest organ, you ask? Why, that would be my skin.

...well, to a point. There are some restrictions on who can be licensed (which states generally delegate to professional associations), and the government tends to get cranky when the patient doesn't survive. There's also usually professional and/or government rules about vanity amputations of major non-vital organs, such as arms.

I think we need to step back for a moment and try to appreciate what we're seeing here. I mean... we are seeing the results of the one truly successful aspect of the Republican platform

/they have completely purged any semblance of intellectualism from their party

FTFA: The largest human organ is actually the skin.

I thought that as well, but she did specify largest organ "in a body". Even being that specific, I'd still need to find out how it compares to the small intestine.

Seriously. Considering sequence homology and rapid growth rate, a fetus is more aptly described as a tumor.

2013-02-18 09:28:33 PM
So wait a minute.  If a fetus is just an organ, doesn't that mean there should be no laws against having it taken out?  Or is this just another step on the slippery slope towards personhood amendments for tonsils?

Christ, why are today's Republicans such farking retards?  Is it the lack of education?  Heavy metals in their crib paint?  Mantadory dropping on their heads as babies?  WTF?

How about a required IQ test for public servants?  Does anybody want to argue the opposing view, that it's perfectly OK to have barely-functioning mongoloids deciding public policy?

Come the fark on already, America.

Because book-learnin' is notoriously left-wing. Why do you think they call them "liberal" arts and sciences? No decent Republican would get an education in that!

It's hyperbole for one and for the other you are wrong.  Surgical procedures are highly regulated.  She is attempting to get this procedure regulated the same as any other surgical procedure.  I.e. you need to have it done at a hospital or a facility where the doctor has ready access to said hospital.  Basically the hyperbole is "fine if it's not a baby you are cutting out then it must be part of you that you are removing.  If it's part of you that you are cutting out then you need to have it done at a hospital just like other operations of this severity".

Knowing full well that hospitals won't go along with being attached to an abortion clinic and therefore they would close by simple regulation of surgical procedures.  It's pretty clever but I believe the case law is against her in this regard.

2013-02-18 10:10:24 PM
So an unborn fetus is no longer considered a human? Good, abortions shouldn't be a problem then.

I really have to wonder if the reporter doing that interview corrected her, or just let her roll on hoping that she would say something even stupider.
I also wonder how long it will be before Republicans mandate that all members of their party have one non-republican aide to proofread all their statements for utter stupidity.

Biology is a liberal conspiracy to undermine what Jesus, St Reagan and the Three Wise Job Creators said when they wrote the Constitution together: "Six thousand years ago, God said let there be America - with liberty and justice for all upper-class, straight, white, Christian men - and it was good. Also, vaginas are icky."

There are plenty of medical procedures that occur at a clinic rather than a hospital. Lap bands are even done at shopping malls for cryin out loud and they are more invasive than an abortion.

2013-02-18 10:22:05 PM
I mean, even ignoring the obvious fact that very few late term abortions are performed in this country and that no clinic that does them exists in Alabama (and also that late term abortions are the ones generally linked to dire medical need: What does she think a uterus is?

Or does she think the baby is bigger than the uterus it's inside of? Do uteri have Tardis-like properties I'm unaware of?

Except that first trimester abortions aren't particularly invasive at all, especially those that are induced with R.U. 486.

Certainly no more invasive than many of the procedures you can have done at a dentist or dermatologist's office. And not a whole lot more invasive than a well-woman exam at any OB/GYN's office.

(Seriously, those things hurt way worse than most men will ever realize.)

I can almost understand a man like Akin not understanding basic reproductive biology.  Maybe he's just grossed out by the details (and is incredibly stupid).

But how in the name of God does an adult woman in America, in the present day, presumably with internet access, not browse through the Wikipedia pages on her own body.  It'd be like finding a man who has never googled 'average penis size' and then went hunting for a tape measure.

2013-02-18 10:31:14 PM
In the 2012 elections, the Republican Party stumbled after some of its candidates put forward unscientific claims in order to argue against abortion.

Let me be perfectly clear: there are no scientific arguments against abortion. There are only moral arguments. There are also no scientific arguments for abortion, either. Those, also, are moral arguments. At a push (no pun intended), there are also economic arguments for/against abortion, but damn if I think we should ever discuss the access to any medical procedure (e.g. abortion, euthanasia, vaccines, organ transplants, blood donations, etc.) in purely economic terms.
