I suppose if you're unfamiliar of the area and it's dark out...

The woman was driving on McGregor Road when she went off onto McGregor Lane and then onto the lake just before noon Sunday

I'm really surprised that she's 24, rather than 74.  That's very early to completely lose your mind.

I have seen people snowmobile across a lake before.

Drunk or texting? I'm thinkng texting, because those yahoos seem to only look for objects in the way, and not actal road.

That's really freaking impressive.

I know where that is.  You have to be going out of your way to go there in the first place, not to mention to drive into a lake there.  And I'm pretty sure there's houses all along the lake too...

I'm not even angry, I'm just impressed.

Well, I could've answered my own question there

Amy Conway O'Brien, an area resident who lives on the lake, said the car drove off McGregor Lane, through one of her neighbor's backyards before ending up on the ice.
Burke said the woman, who was described as about 24 years old and from the Dexter area, thought she was still on the road at first. When she realized she wasn't on the road, the woman told fire officials she tried driving across the lake.

Drunk or texting, oh, I'd have to give 1:1 odds.

This one time I was out in Wisconsin...  We were driving home from dinner, and it was pouring like insanely hard.  I could barely see anything.  The guy in the passenger seat lived there, and so he knew the area.  At one point he says, "You have to slow down and go really carefully around this curve."
"Really why's that?"
"There is a lake right there, and there is no gaurd rail."

And he was right.  It was RIGHT on the curve, and if not for the warning, I likely would have driven right into it.

So, this story is not really all that unbelievable.

Here in Minnesota a frozen lake is often refered to as "the shortcut". I've driven on lakes that had traffic signs put up by the locals directing you away from thin ice.

Yes, when I realize I'm not on a road, the lake is always my next choice for a driving surface.

The most embarrassing part of the entire incident is that she did it sober.

Fun Fact: Michigan, where this happened, actually has more lakes than Minnesota.
