(Tacoma News Tribune)   Dear Traffic Guy: I passed a guy who was toking while driving. "He was steering with his elbows while using a lighter to light the pipe bowl. I know times have changed with our new marijuana law, but could this possibly be legal?"   (thenewstribune.com) divider line 125

You should never steer with your elbows while lighting a bowl

/use your knee

2013-02-18 02:25:28 PM
No. Using your elbows to drive is not illegal, but it's frowned upon. A lot easier to use your knees while lighting the bowl.

Times haven't changed.  People have done this for many years before legalization laws were passed.  They were assholes then and they remain assholes now.

Perfectly acceptable to light a cigarette in the same way though.

Remember the old joke about how the driving test should be staying in your own lane while holding the joint and beer below the dash, while tuning the radio? Times change?

Passing on the right is illegal too.

2013-02-18 02:27:26 PM
You know, this has been an issue that I've been curious on if you legalize / decriminalize pot.  What will the legal limits be for driving?  And how will an officer in the field or the courts determine it?

I know most/all states have a generic driving impaired charge they can use...

Another reason to carpool.

/keep it going counter-clockwise

2013-02-18 02:27:57 PM
Personally, I've been afraid to toke up even with the law changed. I've noticed the police are still arresting for paraphernalia possession in this town.

I'd rather wait a while until they get this sorted out...

The trooper may stop the vehicle based on reasonable suspicion that the driver may be impaired from marijuana use," said State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill.

Yep, saw this last summer driving to Sacremento.  Guy in the car next to me was using both hands to smoke a bowl.

2013-02-18 02:30:36 PM
Boy, that takes me back. Who among us hasn't done that at least once or 27 times in their youth. (yes, I realize it's incredibly stupid and possibly dangerous. but isn't that why they call it dope in the first place)

2013-02-18 02:31:09 PM
Meh, you get in an accident with injury while driving, and you test positive for marijuana period, I have a feeling your ass is grass.  I would imagine in a civil case, attorneys would rip you a new one as well.

Cops can pull you over and cite you for any form of negligent or irresponsible driving, specific cause regardless, even if it's causing something as potentially harmless as your position in your lane being unstable.

Not having any hands on the wheel while moving and doing something else with your hands is actually a perfectly valid reason for a citation if a cop sees it.  They could legally cite you for doing the same with Tobacco, even disregarding the stuff in TFA about public consumption.

So is using the left lane when you're not passing people.

/In VA, it's even illegal to go the speed limit in the left lane if traffic is going faster than you
//Not that anyone is ever ticketed for that

2013-02-18 02:34:38 PM
Yeah but at least it's less dangerous than alcohol!

I once pulled up next to a guy smoking a roach, using a large needle-nose adjustable wrench for a clip.

2013-02-18 02:37:33 PM
I'm sure it's much more dangerous than speeding through a school zone.

I always find it amusing which laws people pick out to take a stand on when it comes to public safety.

One day my brother and I were on a pot tour on some back roads, we drove past this guy's place (a known old-timer hippie) mowing his lawn, we drove by pretty slow to make sure he saw me lighting my piece. His face just lit up with a huge smile. Long after it was over my brother and I agreed we should have stopped and give him a hit.

Dedicated, no. That bong-water smell comes out of a car rug with the greatest reluctance.

I'm so happy I made it through my teen years without hurting someone or ending up in jail. We had a cop lean on the drivers side door and write up citations for open bottles of beer with a ounce of skunk weed and hash oil on the passenger seat. She kept lecturing us that we had to be 100 yards from the water at the park. Had to be at least 45 min of terror

You can not only drive but, you can drive well and brake and shift while tuning the radio or inserting a Savoy Brown bootleg tape.
Jesus you guys really missed the boat  there, I only missed a few lousy years . . . wait. . .

Its considered DWI / DUI.  Just the same as driving on pain killers, muscle relaxers, huffing paint,  or anything that alters your ability to drive and make decisions.

This is why I stick to drinking and driving, it only takes one hand. Leaves my other hand free to slap the kids when they act up.

You also generally do so while not surrounded by other drivers. Or have tinted windows.

Back around 1979 I was hitchhiking and a sweet Cadillac convertible pulled over to pick me up.  I hop in and notice the back seat was full of tennis rackets and equipment. The guy was a tennis pro somewhere.  After a few questions he determines that I'm a safe passenger and he slides his seat back and starts steering with his legs in a lotus type position so that he could have both hands free to roll a J.  I was a bit freaked out and worried about our safety and offered to roll it for him but he insisted on doing it himself. I was a lot younger than him and I don't think he trusted my rolling skills or handling his weed. It was an enjoyable and godsend of a ride after he resumed a norml driving position.

Sigh. There's always some jackass ruining things for everyone. Is it really so hard to wait till you get home to smoke?

I mean, do we (as a member of the Cannabis Enjoyment Society myself) really want to give people more ammo to perpetuate the "Durr stupid stoner myth"?

A good rule of thumb is if you wouldn't drink out of a fifth of liquor, don't farking get high either. Would you drink out of a fifth while driving? No, unless you're a jackass.

So don't smoke, boom you set a good example and people who are opposed to legalization maybe start to think "hey maybe cannabis users aren't all useless irresponsible stoners" and maybe someday I'll be able to consume legally in a state other than Washington or Colorado.

Unfortunately, I predict a lot more stories of this variety out of the legalizing states. I don't foresee very many "Responsible Cannabis User Enjoys Marijuana, Consumes Doritos, Takes Nap" stories to offset them. So wise up, smokers in Colorado and Washington. Be cool, don't blow this for the rest of us.

2013-02-18 03:07:37 PM
...but could this possibly be legal?"

Yes, because Marijuana is completely harmless.

Duh.

I was once almost run over by an old guy in a pickup truck with a bigass fancy wooden pipe in his mouth. I stepped out into a crosswalk when he was a good half-block away and moving fairly slowly. Bastard sped up when he saw me and I had to jump back onto the curb. It was icy and I almost couldn't get traction. As he drove past he glared at me and I saw the pipe. I've always wondered what he was actually smoking.

Me too, road tripping in the middle of nowhere.

In all seriousness folks, just think ahead and roll a j at home if you want to smoke and drive. Inconspicuous, easy to ditch or swallow, etc.
