ReapTheChaos: I don't think it warrants arrest, a ticket would suffice. Spitting in public is just gross and there's no legitimate reason to do it under normal circumstances, especially for those nasty farks chewing tobacco.

I have sinus issues causing me to be almost constantly getting rid of mucus both by blowing my nose and yes I have to hork the occasional loogie.  The alternative is I keep it in and most likely throw up in the near future as it sets off my gag reflex or I sneeze and it flies out anyway.  This is not something I am happy to do, and I try to do it discretely.  So yes, removing this ordinance would benefit me if I lived there.  It was probably enacted to stop people from spitting tobacco in the first place, a habit that has severely declined since then.

Ah yes, beautiful Lakeland. The cultural epicenter of the I-4 corridor.

BarkingUnicorn: It should not be an offense for which one can be arrested. A $50 ticket suffices.

This. I don't know why but public spitting just irks me. It's like you have no common decency for yourself or those around you.
