By reversing himself, McCain effectively sacrificed his own credibility to buy Graham more time to continue his campaign against Hagel - an issue that plays to Graham's advantage as he prepares to run for reelection in 2014.

Oh, it's a nice perk for Graham.  But it's more than just that.

If you have to choose between Hagel and Graham, you have to consider that only one is likely to actually put out.

Good idea:  sacrificing your credibility for your  friend.
Bad idea: sacrificing your credibility for Lindsey Graham.

I just visualized Sarah Palin trying to work a spotlight, somehow spinning it around so that it shines into her own eyes, causing her to blindly stumble off the platform and fall headfirst into a tuba.

I'm pretty sure McCain's turned on by his friend. Ask his first wife, ask Charles Keating, this is McCain's true love.

2013-02-18 11:40:18 AM
McCain only cares about those people who give him money. His wife does. Lobbyists do. Hagel doesn't.

2013-02-18 11:40:32 AM
Why did McCain turn on Chuck Hagel? His bind hatred for Obama. After all Obama "stole" the presidency from him and therefore his war with Iran. Obama ruined all his dreams of war profits and dead american soldiers.

McCain is 10 times the man Obama is - a narcissistic punk who has been handed everything for nothing more than the color of skin.

2013-02-18 11:44:04 AM
McCain remembers every slight against him since high school.  Susan Rice once told him his fly was open and a few others overheard and snickered.  He invented a scandal to get back at her.

2013-02-18 11:44:11 AM
At least Strom Thurmond had the decency to just fall asleep and not disrupt proceedings.

It's embarrassing. He's running around pissing on what little legacy he had left, ironically in an attempt to secure his legacy (what old dying people worry about a lot). Undermining not just our national defense but trampling the reputation of a fellow combat veteran and personal friend.

It's really pretty sad what the Republican party has become. Any other organization would have got that guy the help he needs. Instead, they foster it mistakenly thinking this shameful display is somehow garnering them leverage.

McCain is a disgrace to the nation and this family name. He truly is a prostitute both personally and professionally.

Obama was the son of a single mother who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and become the Editor of the Harvard Law Review and a Constitutional Professor.

McCain was a bad pilot, son of an Admiral who was given special treatment and who crashed and got captured on his first mission.

So because you're a friend with somebody, just set aside your responsibility as a senator and let them have a job that could affect billions of people for decades.

I'm sorry if the Republicans don't operate like Democrats in this instance.

WhoopAssWayne: McCain ... has been handed everything

Having  AdmiralJohn Sidney McCain, Jr for a father and Admiral John Sidney McCain, Sr. for a grandfather might have helped John Sidney McCain III's naval career (and, by extension, his political life) just a little.

You know. This reasoning would explain much of the current GOP's positions on issues.

Yeah, it's just "a friend" we're talking about. From 2008:

McCain did say Hagel could have a place in his own administration, and that he'll continue to talk to him and value his opinions.

...

In an interview with The Associated Press, McCain said he and Hagel are "close and dear friends" who came to different conclusions on the Iraq war. Hagel has been an outspoken critic of the war, while McCain says the United States needs to stay in Iraq and achieve victory.

...

McCain said he's not surprised people are talking about an Obama-Hagel ticket, calling Hagel a "respected leader in America" who "served his country admirably, with honor and distinction."

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:ae_aIS0q01UJ:u sat oday30.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2008-07-16-mccain-hagel _N.htm+&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

And it definitely sounds like McCain is basing his stand on principle and not political pettiness, right?

"To be honest with you Neil, it goes back to there is a lot of ill will towards Senator Hagel because when he was a Republican, he attacked President Bush mercilessly. At one point said he was the worst President since Herbert Hoover. Said the surge was the worst blunder since the Vietnam War which is nonsense. And was very anti his own party and people. People don't forget that."

Not true - McCain had at least 2 other planes shot out from under him before being captured.
One of which he lost while it was parked on the carrier.  Getting shot down before you took off - that takes talent.

To wit:

Timberg, 1995 (p. 94): His professional growth, though reasonably steady, had its troubled moments. Flying low over the Iberian Peninsula, he took out some power lines, which led to a spate of newspaper stories in which he was predictably identified as the son of an admiral. The tale has gotten better with age. These days they talk about the day McCain turned the lights out in Spain.

McCain, 1999 (p. 159): There were occasional setbacks in my efforts to round out my Navy profile. My reputation was certainly not enhanced when I knocked down some power lines while flying too low over southern Spain. My daredevil clowning had cut off electricity to a great many Spanish homes and created a small international incident.

I could see McCain being pissed over Hagel's views on the surge, but he can't seriously be defending Bush - the guy who cost McCain the 2000 primary by spreading a rumor that he had an interracial out-of-wedlock child in southern states.

Just posted this below, but since we have anothe McCain thread:

I was watching LOd the other night and he and Chris Hayes made a point I hadn't thought of before:
The way the Senate is set up, you only have so much time to get anything done, with only working a few weeks a month. Every hour a Republican can eat up on BS is one less hour Dems can try to use for something substantial. All this is just to try to run the clock out and block anything from happening.

For old McCain allies, it was an all-too familiar scenario: Their champion pulled back into the fray by his friend Graham, a likable but impulsive figure caught up in his own political battles with the right in South Carolina. By reversing himself, McCain effectively sacrificed his own credibility to buy Graham more time to continue his campaign against Hagel - an issue that plays to Graham's advantage as he prepares to run for reelection in 2014.

"This is just a bone thrown to Lindsey Graham, who keeps painting himself into corners and then pleading with friends to crawl in there with him in a vain attempt to save a little face," one Republican insider told POLITICO. And making it more poignant and personal in this case: The Graham friendship dominated at the expense of McCain's earlier one with Hagel.

I think I saw this episode of Boardwalk Empire last night. Doesn't Harding get the nomination in the end after 10 rounds?

McCain's legacy:

- The embarrassment of giving the world Sarah Palin
- Building an entire career on being tortured, and then sitting on his hands while his own country did it to others
- Caving to the far right nutjobs

GOP: Now we realize the Iraq war was wrong, vote for us!!!

[Hagel nomination]

GOP: But he was against the IRAQ war!!! He is a horrible candidate.

Please GOP keep attacking someone for being "Radical" because they saw the Iraq war was a turd sandwich.
