traylor: TheMysteriousStranger: What windows the shock wave breaks depends the location of building and other obvious factors.  So why is it surprising?

It's nice that we have the explanation, but it's still a strange view.

wildstarr: I highly doubt a sonic boom did that damage.

It didn't. It was obviously an attack. CBS morning news confirms it.

Look, it's simple. The large iron core of the meteorite caused a reverse tachyon flow which overwhelmed the comb filters leading to a large ion flux which in turned caused the deflector dish to route power through the level 3 power couplers and blowing a fuse on the poop deck.

How would you discover something like that? Wouldn't that take at least a level three, maybe even level four diagnostic?

Fubegra: If you want to learn how to cuss in Russian, bring up some of the YouTube videos.

Heh.  We were watching it on the local news and you could hear in one of the videos cursing in Russian.  I started laughing, and the distaffbopper asked me why.  When I told her what just slipped past the local news self-censoring, she laughed also.

FTA It's strange enough that so many people were able to capture video of the meteorite that streaked over Russia on Friday

And as far as the electronics borking up it might just be the thing messed with electrons in the atmosphere or some other garbledygook and blew out the ultra sensitive components in the devices... or as was mentioned up thread they were about to screw up anyway and the meteorite had nothing to do with it.

Solar flares, lightening strikes, fluctuations in the earths magnetism can mess with electronics. Having a space rock come ripping through the atmosphere like that is bound to have some kind of effect on our little doodads designed around quantum mechanics. Sh*t we don't even fully understand how some of the freaky sh*t at the quantum level works. We just follow the equations to achieve the results they predict.

SuperChuck: nulluspixiusdemonica: So.. sonic boom is now classified as an explosion?

a best initial estimate of the total energy of the event is about 300 kilotons of TNT-equivalent
You think a sonic boom did that?

They've updated that to 500 kilotons now. Good thing it exploded high in the atmosphere instead of close to the ground.

AverageAmericanGuy: This is going to be one of those things we learn from. Like how we all know to get to high ground when the ocean recedes suddenly. Stay away from windows when the sky is suddenly filled with the bright glow of a fireball.

And don't spit into the wind. Don't tug on Superman's cape.
