David Corn, Mother Jones' Washington bureau chief, received the political reporting prize for his work, which shook up the campaign when he reported on the remarks in September.

Good for him.

"Frontline" producers Martin Smith and Michael Kirk won the prize for documentary television reporting for a piece looking at the global economic crisis.

And them.

It's always a winning strategy before an election to let 47% of eligible voters know that they don't matter to you.

I can't believe that no one from Fox News won a Polk Award this year.  In fact, are any of those mentioned actually Newscorp properties?

Once Benghazi becomes a scandal, though, I'm sure they'll get their day in the sun.

He thought he was doing it behind closed doors with like minded people.

It always amazes me that in this day and age people aren't on their highest guard because it is so easy to record just about anything and spread it around the world in a matter of minutes.

man who ultimately didn't win anything

I don't know about that.  The Romneys managed to fleece their voters pretty well through that farce of a presidential campaign, plugged into that sweet Super-PAC dark money, and even took the US government for a ride to the tune of $9 million through the presidential transition fund.  A little song-and-dance on the campaign trail about making everything alright for everybody, and they go home with their pockets stuffed full of everyone else's cash.  Not entirely unlike Mitt's old Bain Capital days.

It's hilarious that liberals see this as some kind of a victory. Romney called out you tax-cheating freeloaders for what you are, and rightfully so. You want to leech as much as possible off society without contributing anything back, not even a token amount. If it were up to me, you'd be working off your debt to society in a government factory making plastic consumer crap, and you'd make the Chinese workers look like goldbricking slobs. You either contribute independently, or you contribute in the work camp, your choice.

Romney was probably doomed from the start, but this story was definitely a big nail in his coffin.  Good on this reporter for finding solid proof that Romney was just as out of touch as we all thought he was.

Translation: Top award for journalist doing his part to help secure Obama's reelection. It was a competitive field this year and I'm just glad there is an institution that recognizes the best of the best.

Up next, the "Steve Kroft 60 Minutes Award" for the journalist who asks Obama the hardest question about why he is so awesome.

From what I can tell from TFA, the different categories ("political reporting", "foreign reporting", "war reporting", "video reporting", others) aren't superior or inferior to each other. The winners in the other categories were for corruption in China, civil war in Syria, corruption and mismanagement in various government agencies and corporations, global economics... and this story's headline is about "Politician says something dumb" as if that's the important one.

Freelance researcher James Carter did the "digging" that led to the video's source, according to Corn's own account.

"The clip had been knocking around in the Internet for several months. ...Carter told me he'd found it through a simple YouTube search and didn't know anything else about it. At my urging, he started digging."

Seems Carter and Corn should have shared the award.

For the longest time I couldn't understand how Romney could come off as so awkward and unlikable every time he was out there, then I remembered this classic Patton Oswalt sketch and realized that his difficulty was in pretending to sound caring and compassionate. He'd not out of touch, he just really doesn't care.

Pro-Tip:  If you're complaining that large numbers of non-productive poors got the president elected so they could stay on the dole, then "democracy" is clearly not the form of government you're looking for.

Unfortunately, there are very few places in the world that still practice the feudalism you seek, but I'm sure you can get at least get closer somewhere like Russia or Saudi Arabia.

47% of voters would still vote for Obama if he killed and ate an infant on live TV, during prime time.  Romney was absolutely correct in believing there was 47% of the vote he would never get.  He just shouldn't have said it in front of a camera, because people like to pretend they are shocked by that kind of truth.

He's getting nothing. I've officially downgraded him to 2/10. I liked the imagery of a government factory - that kept him from 0/10

The GOP has won 1 of 6 presidential popular votes in the last 25 years.  Demographically, they're in danger of ever again being able to put together another majority.  But please, continue to go with "The Republican Party is just fine.  AMERICA is the problem."

Browbeating people into voting for you is SURE to work eventually if you just keep at it.

Well since Obama would get (rightfully) impeached if he did something along those lines, people would effectively be voting for Joe Biden.

And I think people tend to forget that Romney explicitly identified where he got the 47% figure from.  It wasn't an estimate of hardcore Obama supports, it was the number of people who don't pay federal income tax...generally because they are too poor to do so.  There are a lot of traditionally Republican voters who fit in that category.

I enjoyed listening to Senator Paul berate the American public for being too stupid to choose Romney as president.  This is the same nominee that could barely win over the GOP primary base.  He was a terrible candidate and nobody really liked him until they had to, i.e. when he was the last one standing from "Team Red."  Example: out of my ~250 facebook friends, many of whom are not just Republicans but military vets, gun enthusiasts, and bible thumpers, only TWO had "liked" Romney's FB page before the GOP convention.

TWO people followed him.  Yeah, sure they came around and (it seemed) begrudgingly defended everything he did, but it wasn't passion.  He barely warmed GOP hearts... and yet America is too stupid to elect him president.  Yeah, right, Senator.

Yeah, the fact is that this was only a nationally relevant story when Romney presumably had a shot at being leader of the free world.  If it had come out earlier, he probably wouldn't even have had that shot.

But once you assert that you're qualified to run the free world, you give up any right to biatch about the timing of the emergence of your skeletons.  You only got the opportunity to do so because up to that point, you've been successful at keeping them in the closet.

Yeah, it's not all Romney's fault, though.  The GOP is broken from the ground up.

Their grass roots, though not all bad, has a small but loud core of people who can best be described as "white nationalists".  Because of the influence of this group, you absolutely cannot win the GOP primary on a positive vision, you MUST include a hit list of people or groups that you wish to stick it to.

That's why Palin continues to be so popular.  She was never a serious candidate, she doesn't have many genuine political beliefs or opinions on most issues; she's just a well-packaged enemies list.

and hearing this song in my head

I'm a priveleged boy / It's great I gotta tell ya / I'm a priveleged boy / My dad can buy and sell ya / It doesn't matter that you're in the line in front of me / I'll always get the table first because I tip the Maitre d' / And then I'll go to Yale, because I am a legacy / I'm better than you!

Johnny Rainbow didn't get the votes either.

Obama used tens of billions of taxpayer dollars in his campaign. Really think he gives a crap about automakers? But those unions, and the states that depend on them sure liked it. Only what, 25 billion in the hole now?

Soon Obama will have 11 million new voters, bought with more federal money.

Democrats could not win an honest election.
