You have no idea what you're talking about. A person with clinical depression is like someone with cancer. The world would be a slightly better place if more people would realize this. People don't do rational, normal things when they're mentally disturbed. I know someone who committed suicide -- we all knew it was only a matter of time before the mental illness won. There was nothing that could be done, and it wasn't their fault.

Lots of "shoulds" in there should be, but ain't.

People go to funerals in general to compete for attention and power in the affected microsociety. There's no other reason for people to stand around staring at a dead person in a coffin. People will talk behind one another's backs saying things like, "No, she's faking it. She's not as hurt as *I* am!" Judgments fly all over, regardless of the cause of death. "She's only crying for the cameras! I loved him more than she did!"

With suicides, though, there's a special empowerment. People who only knew the deceased peripherally will speak right up and say, "You should have done something! Something's *wrong* with you! You're going to have to live with this! Your relative is burning in HELL right now and it's YOUR fault!"

It's basically what we all know -- People tend to be assholes and attention whores.

R.A.Danny: Screw you. It is never right to murder an innocent, it is never excusable, and if you think it is please PLEASE kill yourself before breeding.

I have a loved one whose parent was bipolar and stopped taking their medication. It's something most people with mental illness have to deal with -- their illness tricks them into believing they're "better" and they stop taking the meds. She called her kid, told her she was going to kill herself and that it was the kid's fault, and then she killed herself. She was not a bad person. She loved her kid. But she was sick, and were it not for her illness, she would never have done what she did. She and others who go through this deserve our compassion and understanding.

But this is the Internet -- the greatest place to see people's mental issues on full display, where folks project their own problems in life at total strangers on message boards. Telling me to kill myself landed you on my ignore list. I hope you feel better.

No. There was no reason for McReady to kill herself. She could afford rehab, psych care, and a semi normal life for her kids.

Unless of course she WAS responsible for her boyfriend's death. That is only speculation though.

I agree. To me, "doctor" Phil is as much of a scum-sucking, bottom-dwelling, slimebag as Sylvia Browne. People who prey on people in pain, and LIE THEIR ASSES OFF to do it..? There should be a special kind of jail for those folks. One involving hot pokers in their anuses.

And yes, I think some funeral directors fit that bill, too. When a family is grieving and you pressure them to spend way more than they need to on a special casket, urn or additional services that aren't worth what you're charging for them, you're a prick. $6,000 for an urn? And the prices some of them try to charge just for PILLOWS for corpses? Give me a damn break.

Anyone who takes advantage of people who are in a moment of weakness or in mourning should be keel-hauled in a Chuck-E-Cheese ball pit once every hour for the remainder of their lives (and if you don't know how nasty those ball pits are, you'd learn really quick if you suffered that fate).

I use to like Dr. Drew back during the love line days, but once he started doing remote diagnosis of people as a talking head on CNN he crossed a line. We have enough mental health problems in this country without someone who does actually have the credentials(unlike Dr. Phil) turning the DSM-IV into a game show.

Thank you.  I'm so sick of this shiat.  You wanna be proudly ignorant of all the goddamn science we have about the genetics and biological and environmental origins of mental illness, or just blatantly insensitive to people suffering from something you don't understand and make no effort to understand? Great go for it.  But keep it to you self, asshole.  Not only do you make their suffering worse with your ignorant opinion based on no scientific facts, you sound like a farking redneck moron.  Never do people with these opinions have any medical background or know people with mental illness to base their opinions on (well, statistically you do, but who would disclose their suffering when they have an idiot around like yourself?).  It's reasons like this people don't discuss their problems or seek out help.  "Suck it up!" everyone says.  So what do people do? "I'll just fix it myself"  But do they ever? No.  Does "sucking it up" ever work? No.  Maybe if you had a slightly shiatty time in your life because of some circumstantial shiat, yeah maybe you can work it out on your own.  But you cannot cure severe clinical depression or bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, etc with "sucking it up."  What do these people do?  They drink, do drugs, hurt those around them or themselves, etc.  It's the same shiat with people taking drugs to help themselves, because the stigma attached to it, because fark science and years of research.  For every person who takes an antidepressant or mood stabilizer or what have you for their respective illness, and it farks with them, there's a hundred that are farking themselves by not taking them.  You have blood on your hands and you should feel bad.  But you won't because you're an asshole.

It depends on the severity of their derangement. For example, if a guy kills someone because he's a paranoid schizophrenic with no grasp on reality, then I don't view him any differently than a rabid dog. The person needs to be removed from society, but I don't have hatred toward them.

WhippingBoy: I"m sorry, but if you're looking for compassion on an anonymous internet site (one renowned for it's snark), you truly must have a mental illness.

I'm sorry, but your lack of compassion regardless of anonymity on any internet site - particularly "one renowned for its snark"-truly displays your issues with mental illness.  And before you flip that ol' lame reply of this being the internet and how I should just 'deal with it' mumbojumbo,  just remember that what's good for the goose, is good for the gander.  The freedoms of "internet" commentary work both ways. What separates them is ironically the good natured, from the bad.

A past history of mental issues, including two previous suicide attempts, a history of addiction, and the recent death of her boyfriend, are way more than enough "reason" for most people. She could afford to get help, sure. But you have to be in a mental state to want the help.

the humor, as black as it maybe, lies not with the fact the women committed suicide but with the way the death of a media figure (movies, music, etc...) causes a bump in their sales and postmortem recognition

Those two children have been "without" their mother for some time. Her epic selfishness is apparently also its cure. Wah... I have a talent to sing... wah... I'm a popular culture figure of some renown and well off if I'm responsible with my personal finances like the rest of America is expected to be... wah... I don't get to always do what I want exactly when and how I want it... wah... I have to take care of my children properly because I was drunk, high, irresponsible or a moron when I made them in the first place... wah... you get the idea. She is only blameless for the fact that she is apparently from Florida and you can't help where you are born.

Fortunately, it is easy to cull the herd when the herd will cull itself, if you let it.

indeebud: I was really hoping she was on the better side of her recovery these past few years in sobriety.  From her life spent catering to her addictions, and her recurring visits towards rehabilitation, she was facing enough struggles in an of themselves.  Add to that her fame - and falls from fame- along with her plights to regain custody of her children, find love, and function normally only to have to endure the suicide of her fiance....I don't know how I'd be able to manage all that under the scrutiny of media.  How very sad she was unable to cope despite her efforts after her fiance's suicide.  Some people may call her a coward for killing herself, but the probable reality is, she didn't feel her life worth living and thus opted to extract herself from the lives of those she loved most (her children) thinking that they'd be better off without her.  So sad no one she trusted could convince her otherwise.

Before she was famous she waited on my best friend and I at a Denny's. We called her Alice the whole night because we had just been introduced to Alice's Restaurant. Several days later we went to pick up another friend Neil McCready who we had told about this cute waitress a while before hand and found out she was his half sister. We apologized for some rude comments about her. After a little while he said "It's not like we grew up together.... a few times I thought 'she's only my half sister, is there a way I could fark the other half?'"
Neil moved away and we lost touch.
A few years later she had a recording career. I confused my best friend by insisting he watch Country music television. When the video came on he looked at it confused, turned to me and said "It's Alice!"
Over the years I've told this story a few times and no one ever knew who she was.
