it's only five light years away, mankind.  If you can't be bothered to take an interest in local affairs, that's your own lookout.

Bloody apathetic planet, I've no sympathy at all.

cherryl taggart: elguerodiablo: Dinki: Geez Huge Meteors , near misses, and now this. We really are doomed.

Funk. I came here to say this. Russian asteroid attack and now this. The quickening is upon us.

Hooray!  Doesn't this mean I don't have to pay those pesky credit card bills?  I mean, the Mayan calendar was a bust, Hurricane Sandy missed me, the meteor hit the wrong side, the Yellowstone caldera is quiet, I need some hope here, people!

It's totally, 100%, definitely a guarantee* that it's going to happen this time. You should blow all your cash and rack up a huge credit card bill a.s.a.p, 'cause there's no time like the present and we're doomed anyway!
Spend, spend, spend!

/* not a guarantee.

Smgth: If things Douglas Adams predicted start coming true, it's time to start drinking, because we are BONED and we are boned SOON.

Hey look, man, I'm a huge fan.  I've read everything, and listened to every radio bit (MANY times).  While he WAS indeed a great writer, I wouldn't put him on the top of the heap.  Just the fact that Arthur and Ford were stuck in prehistoric earth twice, with no explanation for why the story rebooted there, shows that.

I think if here were a way to classify his stories, it would be that they were wildly full of the most obscure nonsense anyone could think of.  That is what made it all so hysterical.

That bit with the Chesterfield sofa still cracks me up, though.

WorkingInParadise: Is anyone here a marine biologist?

I got my GED in marine biology.

(Actually I live in San Diego where this happened and I do know a tiny bit of marine biology, we have the food sources for mega-pods. I'm waiting for the killer whales to come back here like we had last year. There have also been sightings of mega-pods of dolphins not far from here in the Sea of Cortez in Baja, MX.)

Really, the Dirk Gently books are much funnier than the overhyped Hitchhiker ones.

Eh.  I never could get into the Dirk Gently books at all.  I enjoyed the Hitchhiker ones a lot more, personally.

I saw something like this back in the ninety's but I did not call it a super mega-pod, it was a shiatstorm of dolphins.

Neither.  They are swimming.
